Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 30, 2017

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 30, 2017

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

Detroit Strong New and Old: Tosha Owens and Sammy Davis, Jr.!!!

After looking at arguably Detroit’s worst moment in history, it’s time to look at the present and the future with positive vibes!

Any artist will tell you that they’re always looking for a good song, if not a great song. Obviously, for most, those are extremely rare. A great song about a city? Well, you might as well pull out a musical microscope to find one.

Tosha Owens, an award winning Detroit singer, has done it! On her latest song and video, “Detroit Strong,” she adds her incredible talent to a song about what makes the city GREAT! The video is fun to watch as she visits many of Detroit’s fun and happening locales!

Tosha herself is an upbeat person with a pleasant personality! She always seems to have a smile on her face—except when she’s singing a song where she has to change that mood.

Sales of the song go to Sparky Anderson’s charity, CATCH!

I’m happy to say that I’ve had a chance to jam with her (That’s me, Phil Maq, sitting in on drums),  as well as legendary guitarist, Jim McCarty, upcoming guitar great, Jimmy Alter, and Marvelous Marvin Conrad on bass, at St. Clair Shores, “Blue Goose Inn!”

Of course, Tosha’s song brought to mind another song about Detroit from 1984, that was written by Berry Gordy, Jr. and Willie Hutch. There was a video to support Sammy Davis, Jr.’s great vocal of a song called, “Hello Detroit!” It’s interesting to watch views of the city across that 30 plus year timeline!

July 23, 1967: Detroit, Michigan-The Revolution in Song!

Fifty years ago on Sunday July 23, I would normally be at a baseball game.

That was pretty much the pattern with my friends. If the Detroit Tigers were playing and I didn’t have any family plans, I would normally get everyone together and my brother would drop us off at Tiger Stadium.

We would take the bus home after the game including a transfer at Warren and Trumbull.

At that point in time, we were still sitting in the left field grandstands. $2 a ticket if I remember correctly.

On July 23, the Tigers had their usual Sunday afternoon game. For some reason, and I can’t remember why, I didn’t go to the game. I think I wasn’t feeling well. Believe me, next to music, baseball was my next favorite interest, and it was a very close second! I must have been close to being on a deathbed. We were all just kids anywhere from 9 to 11 years old.

Surprisingly, someone else was able to arrange a ride to the game. When I talked to my friends later, they told me that you could see heavy smoke over the top of the stadium. They said they had no idea what was going on, but the game continued so they didn’t worry about it.

But they also said that the atmosphere at the ballpark was strange that day. People seemed on edge. They said the bus ride also began to get scary and they wanted to get out of there fast. People were screaming and yelling. Everyone made it home safely, but not without worry.

Of course, unknown to them or myself, the uprising had begun earlier that day. And it seemed to go on for eternity that week.

And in a sense, it did.

As much as I tried to stay away from this topic on “Prime Time Theme Attic” with @Phil Maq, Mondays, from 8PM-10PM ET, I find that I am drawn to the music about the conflict. I wasn’t sure I would be able to get anywhere with the music, but I think I have it figured out. There will also be the usual but always unusual, Phil’s Faves: Songs, “Top 9 at 9:09!”

Gil Scott—Heron was a jazz beat poet that made his debut afterwards, and produced a song, that if a person could make the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame” on just one song, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” would be it. It was played on a consistent basis on all of the underground stations. The song will be featured on the show:

I’m not providing any answers or solutions, but I will look at music by artists surrounding what happened 50 years ago.

2017: The New Summer of Love, Pt.1!!!

For better or worse, the summer of 1967 is known as the “Summer of Love.” Back then, social changes merged with musical exploration-especially psychedelic music, combined in an “innocent” way, never again to be repeated. It was an interesting time, and the sounds that emerged still inspires musicians to emulate it! In other words, some of the recent music that is still being released by artists today owes its style to those inspirational times!
