“Q” Bombs: August 18, 2013

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 11, 2013

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Pepto–Bismol Zen Squirrel–Too Funny!!!

Look. I’ll admit that I have a thing for squirrels. They crack me up as they scamper around all over the place. I know they can cause damage to things, too, but I like to think that they use their energy for good–like this zen squirrel!

Toby Keith, Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights, and Los Teen Pops Provide Summer Fun!

One of the best videos ever made as far as I’m concerned is Toby Keith’s “Trailerhood!” The song is upbeat, the drumming is actually a little tricky, and the characters in the video seem all too real. I’ve never lived in a trailer court, but if I did I would want these people as my neighbors. As a matter of fact, I’d like them as my neighbors right now! I love this video!!!!

Another summer fun video is Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights’ “Ice Cream!” I love ice cream and I totally relate to this video and song. Scoop it on me!!

And finally, comes this curiosity sent to me by a friend of mine. It is a vintage Mexican film of Los Teen Pops doing “Popotitos”–a Spanish version of “Bony Maronie.” Total campy fun, but the music is ultra cool!

A Couple of Bug Videos for Third Annual “Bug-a-Palooza” on “Theme Attic”

Sorting through videos of songs that will be featured on my show today, August 7, from 10AM-Noon EDT at www.whfr.fm, I found a couple of favorites.

One of my favorite songs when I was a kid, was Frank Sinatra’s “High Hopes.” Sammy Kahn’s lyrical message is great and the kids can’t help but make you smile–and I still sing it to myself sometimes!.

One of my favorite videos from a couple of years ago is “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton. Blake does it just right as the “aw shucks guy” who’s lucky enough to ride off with the girl.

No new additions this week but Johnny Swim got annoying enough to make it to the top……….

Worst Videos for the week of August 4, 2013

1. Heartbeats—Johnny Swim
2. Clarity—Zedd with Foxes
3. Treasure—Bruno Mars
4. We Can’t Stop—Miley Cyrus
5. Hey Girl—Billy Currington
6. Walk Off the Earth—Red Hands
7. The Other Side—Jason Derulo
8. Goodbye Town—Lady Antebellum
9. Mirrors—Justin Timberlake
10. Blurred Lines—Robin Thicke and Pharrell

1) “Heartbeats”—Johnny Swim’s video and song have gone into cardiac arrest for me. Please, do not resuscitate…………………
2) “Clarity”—Actually, the beginning of this song is pretty good. It’s when the dance music kicks in that it loses it for me. The video is incomprehensible……………….
3) “Treasure”—Come on, now. Does anyone really need to see a dance troupe of Bruno Mars all doing a pelvic thrust…………………….
4) “We Can’t Stop”—No, and I don’t think that Miley Cyrus has been stopped on this list yet…………
5) Hey Girl—Billy Currington’s melody for this boring video and song has a pop bent to it. Some of it’s phrasing sounds like it could have been used on Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie.” That’s why it’s on this list. It’s sooooooooooooo derivative…………..
6) “Walk Off This Earth”—I dunno. Red Hands may fall off this list. I’m still uncertain about this one…………..
7) “The Other Side”—Jason Derulo just keeps sticking around the top on VH1…………..
8) “Goodbye Town”—Yaaaaaaaaawwwwwnnnnn.
9) “Mirrors”—Where’s the smoke for why this one’s so popular…………………
10) “Blurred Lines”—Not bad…just not good………….
