“Q” Bombs: July 7, 2013

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

“Barbara Ann” or “Banana Potato” Video from The Minions!

I wasn’t aware of The Minions from Despicable Me 2 singing a song until my daughter showed it to me. It’s a parody of “Barbara Ann” (apparently also known as “Banana Potato” in minion speak), that once I saw it, I knew it had to go on my website!

For some reason, I also like watching the subtitles as they sing, so I have included this version:

And for extreme silliness, I included this version:

“The River Jordan”–Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys

When Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys perform live, there are usually many showstoppers–the songs that just take your breath away. “The River Jordan” is my favorite one! This is a cover of a song written by May Erlewine, one of The Flatbellys’ “label mates.” The subject is a short river in northern lower Michigan that provided a spiritual experience for the writer. That’s exactly how I feel when I listen to their version of the song.

Although the sound quality of the video isn’t great, and the band has gotten even better performing it since it was recorded, this is as close as you can get to the song without seeing them live. I hope it’s on their next album, but this had to go up on my site.

The Minions and Jen Carfagno Are Absolutely Too Cute!!!

In case you haven’t seen it, The Weather Channel has a promo video featuring one of it’s on air personalities, Jen Carfagno (who is very cute on her own!), and a couple of minions from the new “Despicable Me 2” animated feature! There isn’t an “official” posting of this clip, but someone was nice enough to post this rough version and I can’t resist putting it on my website since I have watched it so many times but found it difficult to locate on the web. The combination of Jen and the minions is absolutely too cute (and funny)!!!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 30, 2013

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

“Highway Don’t Care” returns to the top for a fourth week after being interrupted by Paul McCartney last week. It’s just so good!

Top 10 Videos and Performances for the Week of June 23, 2013

1. Highway Don’t Care—Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban
2. Jump Right In—Zac Brown Band
3. Radioactive—Imagine Dragons
4. Love Somebody—Maroon 5 with Adam Levine
5. I Need Your Love—Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding
6. Remix (I Like The)—New Kids on the Block
7. Beat This Summer—Brad Paisley
8. Can’t Hold Us—Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Ray Dalton
9. UFO—Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights
10. #Beautiful—Mariah Carey and Miguel

1) “Highway Don’t Care”—I recently watched this video with my wife and teenage daughter and it was like a new experience. Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, and Keith Urban put just the right touches on their parts to make the video and song bigger than the individual pieces!
2) “Jump Right In”—Once again the Zac Brown Band fill their video with plenty of things to keep the viewer engaged!
3) “Radioactive”—I thought I was getting over Imagine Dragons’ video, but I just saw it again this morning before I wrote this post and I still like it!
4) “Love Somebody”—Maroon 5’s visually stimulating video hangs in there!
5) “I Need Your Love”—Not a great video, but I really like the “8 bit” sounding synthesizer part!
6) “Remix (I Like The)”—Why do I continue to find this New Kids on the Block video to be interesting…and catchy? Because it is!
7) “Beat This Summer”—Brad Paisley may just have another monster video like his previous “Water!”
8) “Can’t Hold Us”—Macklemore & Lewis’ epic video has a lot of great stuff in it!
9) “UFO”—Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights put together a silly video about a real life experience. This should have been on last week’s list, but I forgot about it. I really love Joanie’s “crazy” facial expressions!
10) “#Beautiful”—It’s really difficult for me to drop this video when Mariah Carey sounds and looks so good!

“I Love It” (Man, do I hate saying that!), returns to the top of the bad list. Ironically, three bombs dropped off this week, but were quickly replaced…………….

Worst Videos for the week of June 23, 2013

1. I Love It—Icona Pop with Charli XCX
2. 1994—Jason Aldean
3. Mirrors—Justin Timberlake
4. Heart Attack—Demi Lovato
5. Lego House—Ed Sheeran
6. Stompa—Serena Ryder
7. My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up)—Fall Out Boy
8. Just Give Me a Reason—P!nk with Nate Reuss of fun.
9. Blurred Lines—Robin Thicke with T.I. and Pharrell
10. Done—The Band Perry

1) “I Love It”—I had a feeling it would only be a matter of time before Icona Pop and Charli XCX made it back to the top spot. You can only push the garbage down so many times before it pops back on top.
2) “1994”—You know, 1994 was a lot more fun than this Jason Aldean video and song…….
3) “Mirrors”—Justin Timberlake is #1 on VH1 this week, but I can’t help but feel there’s something else in this video that hasn’t hit me yet………..
4) “Heart Attack”—Ho, hum. Demi Lovato. Screechy song…………….
5) “Lego House”—A house built out of Legos shouldn’t hang around this long………..
6) “Stompa”—Whata???
7) “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up)”—I’ve tried to avoid putting Fall Out Boy on this list because of that almost always present tricky song title, but the time has come………….
8) “Just Give Me a Reason”—…why P!nk and Nate Reuss continue to torture us by hanging around………….
9) “Blurred Lines”—I continue to have misgivings about Robin Thicke’s video. The song is OK, the women are “cute,” but it doesn’t seem to be “good” or “sexy” enough either way…………………………..
10) “Done”—The Band Perry roll on with a “paint by numbers” video…………
