“Q” Bombs: February 3, 2013

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

Jessica Dayle is now on youtube!

Since I have admired Jessica Dayle for almost a year now, I have been pleasantly surprised to find that she has begun posting videos on YouTube. This is fantastic! Now everybody can see for themselves how relaxed and down to earth she is. And, oh yeah. She also looks almost as beautiful as her pretty voice!

I also want to thank her for the kind words that she has said about me in her own blog. Check out her website at www.jessicadayle.com…and sign up for her newsletter!

Below is the ultra cute video that she sent out on Valentine’s Day:

#113 February 7th Mardi Gras “Theme Attic” Playlist!

Well, the Mardi Gras show really did turn out to be a “blast from the bayou,” as Wayne Toups might say! I made a lot of changes at the last minute and Johnette Downing, Dr.John, David Lindley, and “Firewater” were added, which I think made the show an even spicier gumbo!

I hope you got a kick out of the “Walkin’” theme. All of the songs are Fats Domino songs, and that one popped into my head the night before the show.

Beausoleil was picked the morning of the show, and it was so obvious I can’t figure out why I didn’t pick them sooner. Micharel Doucet and the rest of the band are staunch defenders of the Acadian culture. I luckily remembered “Acadian Driftwood when I added Beausoleil.

“Java” was a spur of the moment add. “Diggy Liggy Lo” was a phone request. “Obvious Child” was a last minute idea. I meant to play a different Weird Al medley, but I grabbed the wrong one.

It all worked splendidly!

#112A February 4th Playlist for “Theme Attic” Bonus Edition!

It was so much fun to have the Sultans of String playing their world music in the studio! I want to personally thank Chris McKhool, Kevin Laliberte, & Drew Birston for dropping in!

I was happy to spread my wings on the other styles of music! I wanted to do more musical traveling but I guess that will have to wait for another show. All things considered, I think the surrounding Mardi Gras, Italy, blues, and polka sets covered a lot of territory.

“Theme Attic” Playlist from January 24th Heard on WHFR.FM, 10AM-Noon

Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys live in the studio for an exclusive performance was simply amazing! The insight that she provided on songs made them have even more meaning–if that’s even possible. I want to personally thank Josh Rilko (mandolin), Mark Lavengood (dobro), Keith Billick (banjo), Spencer Cain (bass) and Lindsay Lou (guitar) for an incredible experience!

The first set featured cold weather songs.

The next set featured new songs into the studio that caught my attention. The ones that I picked really had me pumped, too, especially that wicked blues number, “Midnight Creeper!” The Beatlesque Thorcraft Cobra song made me think we switched decades.

And the final set, was a bluegrass warmup set for Linday Lou & The Flatbellys. I thought putting the Charles River Valley Boys right before Steve Martin and Paul McCartney would be any interesting contrast.

Here’s the playlist:

Anyday – Thorcraft Cobra
Hopa!-Talitha Mackenzie (Spiorad-Sonas)

I’ve Just Seen a Face-Charles River Valley Boys (Beatle Country-Rounder)
Best Love-Steve Martin with Paul McCartney (#2210) (Rare Bird Alert-Rounder)
Rain in the Valley—The Steel Wheels (Lay Down Lay Low-thesteelwheels.com)

Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys Live in the Studio (Exclusive)

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 27, 2013

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.
