Phil’s Faves: Videos, May 27, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

A phone knocks the banjo from the top spot and a couple of really good live performances are highlights on this week’s list!

1) “Call Me Maybe”—A well deserved rise to the top for Carly Rae Jepsen! I really like this homemade looking video and it makes me laugh every time the look one of her band members has on his face when he receives the neighbor’s phone number!
2) “Banjo”—Rascal Flatts moved up again after falling on CMT’s countdown! That means the banjo season may continue longer than expected!
3) “Lights”—Ellie Goulding continues to hang on and move up on VH1!
4) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—I like this video better than the Kip Moore one! It seems more playful!
5) “Sweeter”—Still good, but turning sour now………………………
6) “Good Girl”—Even though I’ve watched this video a number of times and I was ready to let it drop off, I actually played closer attention the last time I saw it and I picked up a few things I hadn’t noticed before. For example, I like the mirror angle of Carrie Underwood’s good girl/bad girl profile!
7) “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck”—I still like Kip Moore’s video, but I like the other videos more………………
8) “Starships”—Nicky Minaj alternates between looking hot and bad in the scenes in this video. I’m not sure what to make of that. But I really like what I’m guessing is the beautiful Hawaiian scenery as the backdrop for the video!
9) “Low Hanging Fruit”—I’m not normally a fan of Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass). I haven’t really found their songs to be all that funny even though Jack Black usually makes me laugh in even his worst movies, and I will watch “School of Rock” every time I run across it on TV! This live performance of a song chock full of double entendres that ended with a choreographed guitar army was flat out hilarious!
10) “Nomad”—Carlos Santana began promoting his new “Shape Shifter” album by performing this blistering instrumental taken from it on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno! He continues to be incredible!

“Q” Bombs: May 27, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

“Drive By” stays on top for a seventh week. One long term bomb finally falls off as two new entries get unwelcomed onto the list.

Worst Videos for the week of May 27, 2012

1. Drive By—Train
2. Brokenhearted—Karmin
3. Springsteen—Eric Church
4. Payphone—Maroon 5 with Wiz Khalifa
5. Safe and Sound—Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars
6. Lullaby—Nickelback
7. Feel So Close—Calvin Harris
8. Wanted—Hunter Hayes
9. Drunk on You—Luke Bryan

1) “Drive By”—Train continues to return, week after week, to the scene of their crime…
2) “Brokenhearted”—Karmin continues to keep the energy level high which means this one will be around for a while………………..
3) “Springsteen”—Eric Church uses the cheap ploy of wearing a flag around his neck in this video. When Bruce Springsteen waved the flag for “Born in the USA,” it was because of the exact same kind of pseudo patriotic fervor that was rampant in the country at the time. In other words, Eric Church doesn’t get it………………
4) “Payphone”—I do have to admit this mini movie within a video looks very exciting. Unfortunately, the plot doesn’t make any sense……………………..
5) “Safe and Sound”—Taylor Swift’s strong brand recognition is keeping this very mediocre video and song hanging around way longer than it would’ve if it had been anybody else………………
6) “Lullaby”—This Nickelback video just keeps putting me to sleep every time I watch it. I guess it was appropriately named………………………
7) “Feel So Close”—I’m not 100% sold that this is a bad Calvin Harris video or song, so my opinion may change in the future. But right now, it does nothing for me…………..
8] “Wanted”—You know I am a Hunter Hayes fan, but I can’t believe that this is the video and song that most people want to see right now……………
9) “Drunk on You”—Luke Bryan’s video may rise again on the list, but right now it’s not irritating me too much…………………….
10) “Fine By Me”—I will say this about the video, I noticed two more things I like about it. The reel-to-reel recorder and the basketball hoop that shows up in the background are two things I personally really like!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, May 20, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

The rumours are true: Adele has made it to the top of this good list! “21” is still selling like crazy and this song may be one of the reasons! I really like the variety on this list!

Top Ten Songs for the Week of May 20, 2012

1. Rumour Has It—Adele
2. Banjo—Rascal Flatts
3. Call Me Maybe—Carly Rae Jepsen

5. Music on the Wind—Suzy Bogguss
6. Over You—Miranda Lambert
7. Modern Music—Be Bop Deluxe
8. Nice to Be Here—John Cowan
9. Surf Blaster—The Vara-Tones
10. English Tea—Paul McCartney

1) “Rumour Has It”—I still haven’t seen a video for Adele’s latest release and I like
that! The song should be able to stand on its own…and it does!
2) “Banjo”—Sorry “Banjo.” Disrespected again, as usual. Let’s see what kind of fight you have left in you…………….
3) “Call Me Maybe”—I think Carly Rae Jepsen’s song isn’t as good as the video. It’s too repetitious. But it’s good enough this week!
4) “Sweeter”—Well, this one has peaked, but it had a good run………….
5) “Music on the Wind”—My favorite Suzy Bogguss song! It feels like a warm breeze blowing in the desert! The time signatures fluctuate constantly. It features mandolin, accordion and Mexican flavored strings. Suzy sounds as coy and romantic as she ever has! The vocal is perfect, rising and falling, just like the music and romance that is on the wind! Not only is this my favorite Suzy Bogguss song, it is also one of my favorite songs! I’m sure that you will see it reappear from time to time on this list.
6) “Over You”—This one is fading, but I still like it.
7) “Modern Music”—This song medley always reminds me of May. To me, it is close in structure to any of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” medleys. Melodic songs weave in and out with Beatlesque guitar connections! I can’t ever get tired of hearing it!
8) “Nice to Be Here”—I have always liked this Moody Blues song that bears a strong resemblance in imagery to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lookin’ Out My Backdoor.” It’s a whimsical observation about nature’s smaller creatures playing music when nobody is looking. I don’t care what version or medium you hear the Moodies’ in, the original mix is awful and muddied. With this bluegrass version, the lyrics and music are crystal clear. It’s the first time I’ve ever been able to understand all of the words. This is the second batch of bluegrass tribute songs for The Moody Blues—several members play on most of the songs themselves. The CD is called “Moody Bluegrass Two…Much Love: Nashville Tribute to The Moody Blues.” This is probably my favorite song out of all of them!
9) “Surf Blaster”—A reunion CD by a 60’s surf band that’s better than what they originally did! “Surf Blaster” is the opening instrumental track, and it explodes in your ears with a drum solo before seguing to the guitars! It’s always fun to run across anything from a band like The Vara-Tones!
10) “English Tea”—This is another typical underexposed song by Paul McCartney from his Chaos & Creation in the Backyard album. It’s very short and British sounding but to the point and was a very nice addition to his live shows from that timespan!

3) “Lights”—The lights may be starting to dim for Ellie! I did like having this one show up for a second time!
4) “Sweeter”—Alright. This one’s starting to lose it flavor—just like a stick of gum you popped in your mouth 10 minutes ago……………
5) “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck”—The song for this video is pretty catchy, too!
6) “Good Girl”—Carrie, you’re starting to wear out your welcome now………..
7) “Over You”—I guess I’m getting over this song now……………….
8) “Starships”—Another freaky Nicki Minaj video! I like it! This is what videos were made for!
9) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—Easton looks like he’s having a good time in the video! That’s a good thing!
10)“Crazy Train”—I would love to go cross country and sing along with this family that can recreate acapella versions of Ozzy Osbourne songs!

1) “Drive By”—Apparently, we’re going once more around the block for another week……..
2) “Springsteen”—I wish the song was at least a zillionth as good as Bruce’s…………

4) “Brokenhearted”—I’m getting brokenhearted just by having this song hang around so long………..
5) “Payphone”—You go, Adam! You use those outdated references to show how hip you are!
6) “Safe and Sound”—The video and song are as boring and cliché as its title………….
7) “Lullaby”—I know I’m not the first person to make this observation, but I can’t tell the difference between this song and dozens of their other songs. Sometimes brand recognition isn’t a good thing…………………

9) “Fine By Me”—The video, even with a nice looking woman in it, doesn’t make any sense…………..

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. 8) “If Mama Ain’t Happy”—“If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” Eddie Coker’s funky tongue-in-cheek children’s song seems so appropriate—and true for Mother’s Day!

10) “Call Me Maybe”—Carly Rae Jepsen’s song is just as infectious as her video!

1) “Banjo”—All of a sudden, I started seeing this one a lot again! I have yet to get tired of seeing all of the hokey overexaggeration for the banjo! Or is it hokey?????
2) “Lights”—After several return weeks on the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown where they only showed a snippet, this one is back with full showings—and moving up again! I never would have thought that!
3) “Sweeter”—I don’t know. I guess I like the sleazy quality of the video, too!
4) “Over You”—Still good, but I’m seeing “Banjo” more often than this Miranda Lambert video, so I was distracted and this one fell.
5) “Good Girl”—Carrie Underwood is still good enough to stay on the list!
6) “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck”—Alright. This is how you make a mindless country video. You have a pretty woman bopping around during the whole song showing interest in the singer. It’s cute and enjoyable to watch! This is so much better than the pseudo melodrama in the recent Luke Bryan videos!
7) “I Won’t Give Up”—A very touching and sincere live performance by Jason Mraz!
8) “Call Me Maybe”—A former Canadian Idol contestant, Carly Rae Jepsen, comes out with a video that cuts across all demographics! And the ending has an unexpected twist! How can you NOT like this video??!!
9) “Dancin’ Away With My Heart”—Lady A keeps on dancin’ for another week………
10) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—Same analysis as “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck!” QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

1) “Endless Love”—I guess you couldn’t keep this song out of the top spot! The first time it was released it stayed at the top for almost three months!
2) “Banjo”—I think the banjo may just be recharging its batteries while other songs knock each other off!
3) “Sweeter”—The lyrics of this song are so wrong but the music makes it sound so right!
4) “Over You”—Miranda Lambert keeps moving up. I’m glad I’m not over this song yet!
5) “Ballad of a Thin Man”—Yay! I’ve heard it again during this last week and it keeps sounding better each time!
6) “Good Girl” —Wow! I didn’t expect to get so tired of this song so fast. Maybe it was the continuous airplay every time I turned anything on!!!
7) “Dancin’ Away with My Heart”—I hope this Lady A song doesn’t dance away too quickly. It already has my heart………..
8) “Rumour Has It”—I haven’t seen a video for this song yet. I don’t even know if there is one, but I look this mid-tempo rocker from Adele!
9) “Casino Royale”—I haven’t hear this Burt Bacharach–Hal David song since Saturday Night Live made fun of it! The arrangement is sharp and catchy and sounds a little bit different from other songs that Herb Alpert and the boys did as they were one of the few bands that battled The Beatles head to head! Listen to the trumpet work on this one. There are a lot of different textures in the song…plus strings!
10) “A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada”— The Texas Tornados twist a cliché into a sexy pun filled song! Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Myers, and Doug Sahm: Los Mexicanos Beatles to me! A perfect treat for Cinco de Mayo! Ah-ha!!!

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

1) “Over You”—I really latched on to this Miranda Lambert video this week! It’s a good song with an arty video and both parts have tremendous feeling!
2) “Banjo”—The banjo stills continues to hover near the top!
3) “Sweeter”—I think this Gavin Degraw video has had its run, but I still like it!
4) “Good Girl”—The “good girl” is starting to turn into the “not so exciting girl”……
5) “Free”—It’s kind of funny. I hadn’t seen the video for a few weeks and now its like an old friend has returned!
6) “Lights”—Let’s keep the “lights” on a little bit longer! (I can’t believe that Skrillex is her boyfriend????)
7) “Endless Love”—I’m not seeing this one very often, so I’m starting to lose interest……….
8) “So Good”—It just goes to show you that a super catchy chorus can trump any other part of a song!
9) “Dancin’ Away With My Heart”—Lady A would probably be happier treading water at No. 6………………………
10) “Favorite Song”—Another “bubbly” upbeat video from Colbie! How can you not like it?!
