Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 28, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, August 21, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil Maq Serves Up the Blues on Friday’s “Highway 61,” 2PM-4PM EDT!!!

I think I have done a full Blues show as a theme.
But I have never done a show on the iconic “Highway 61!”
My “Theme Attic” show almost always has several Blues tunes.
I also am of the belief that most music that is most popular and the elements therein is heavily based on Blues ingredients.
In other words, I feel connected to the Blues most of the time.
Well, on Friday, Phil Maq serves up the Blues on HWY61 frpm 2PM-4PM EDT!!!
It might have taken almost 12 years to get there, but I will finally get to broadcast in that hallowed time slot that legendary DJ Jo Ann Korczynska commanded for so many years, and DJ Kitty Luv continues that time honored tradition of delivering the Blues to Detroit and the world!!!
Will you join me?
I’ll try not to hyperventilate as I play songs by the following artists:
Kenny Neal, Kelly’s Lot, Eliza Neals (Her album cover for “Badder to the Bone” is on the bottom of the banner, second from the left!), Dave Weld & The Imperial Flames, Mick Clarke, Planet D Nonet (Their album cover for “Planet D Nonet: Live From the Scarab Club Tribute to Buddy Johnson” is third from the right in the banner!), Tosha Owens, Jimmy Carpenter, Jay Douglas (His new album cover for “Confession” is second from the right in the banner!), John Mayall, The Groove Krewe, Phantom Blues Band (Their new album cover for “Blues for Breakfast” is on the top row of the banner, second from the left!), Shaun Murphy, Katie Henry, Shemekia Copeland (Her brand new album cover for “Done Come Too Far” is third from the left in the banner!), DownRiver DanGeorge Bedard, Carl Caballero and The Wreckage Mindi Abair, Ben Levin Piano, Veronica Lewis, Cindy Cashdollar and more!!!
So put your hearts on your sleeves, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this Friday’s HWY61 from 2PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq for this one special show!

The Sun Rolls Around to Theme Attic Again and Again, Wednesday 12PM-5:30PM EDT!!!

Well, one week ago I was preparing to leave for my show on Wednesday morning when I received a notice that the campus was closed because of a power failure.
Dang!
I apologize to anyone for not being able to present my show, but that was beyond my powers.
This gave me the unusual chance to reset things.
However, I reviewed my list and I decided to pretty much leave it as is.
Also, I will be switching over to Jazz around 4PM EDT and continue on with that until about 5:30PM!
I even decided to recycle most of post from last week.
Here we go!:
When I was a kid, the sun was my friend.
Little did I know, he wasn’t to be trusted.
He’s more like a frenemy.
But I still like to see him! I just have to prep for him.
It wouldn’t be a summer on “Theme Attic” without having some fun with That Lucky Old Sun on Wednesday with host Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
A Top 9 at 2:09 Faves Album Countdown will be part of the fun!!!
Here’s this week’s numbers: 15 artist debuts (15?! Seriously?! It’s not even a Showcase Show!), 11 new or newish releases, 10 artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!!
Plenty of new tunes and hot classics!!!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate. I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09PM EDT should include brand new Svvarms, Forrest McDonald Band, Dave Caruso Music, Tom Gilberts Trio, Zoë Pollock, The Alonzo Spirit Band, Tom Alter Music, Mike Ward: PsychoSongs, brand new JD Huggins, brand new Art d’Ecco (His album cover for “After the Head Rush” is second from the right in the banner!), George Bedard and the Kingpins, Diamonds in the Rust, and many more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Shaun Murphy (Her album cover for “Ready to Try” is in the lower left corner of the banner!), Wendy Webb, Coral Creek Music, brand new Cody Lee’s Last Detail, Rod Johnson, Lyn Stanley Jazz Recording Artist, Ben Levin Piano, Luther Keith (His album “Working Bluesman” ps in the right corner of the banner!), Willie Nelson and Leon Russell, Eric Harrison – Singer-Songwriter, Jimmy Carpenter, The Armoires, Katie Henry (Her album cover for “On My Way” is second from the left in the banner!) Roger Ponder, Sultans of String, Mike Latini Music, Dan Bern, Tommy Z, Those Darlins, sparkle*jets u.k.. From a fun new SpyderPop Records compilation, “We All Shine On: Celebrating the Music of 1970!”), brand new Taylor Grey, and many more!!!
Songs by artists from 4PM-5:30 EDT will include Jeff Scott Music, Frank Sinatra, Lyn Stanley Jazz Recording Artist and Claire Daly!!!
So grab plenty of sunscreen and cool beverages, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-5:30 PM EDT with Phil Maq!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “There’s Always Me” by Elvis Presley!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

Whichever way one wants to carve up Elvis Presley’s recorded catalog of music, the totals are something like 57 or so studio albums, 20 plus movie soundtrack albums, and many live albums and so many assorted great hits and collections that the total is conservatively north of 100 to 125.

Within a span of approximately 23 years, Elvis released a mountain of recorded material!

If we presume that most Elvis fans have heard the soundtracks because they saw the movies, or at least most of them, the average Presley fan has listened to–just counting the recorded film songs, about 25% of his music.

Throw in all of the hits that have played for many years on oldies stations, toss in some of the live albums from TV specials, and maybe that average listener likes Gospel music, so there’s a bit more to add to a listening total.

In this area, and let’s be wildly optimistic about how much an average person may have listened to Elvis music, maybe that person has listened to 50% of the output.

Then there’s at least another three hundred songs they haven’t listened to!

That’s a lot of music to explore and not have heard from one of the Greatest Ever Recording Artist!

That’s the conclusion I arrived at, so I have started to spend some time passing through Presley’s catalog.

I intend to occasionally draw some attention to some relatively overlooked songs.

And because they are Elvis songs, most will into my category of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!

Today’s Elvis Presley selection is from a 1961 album called “Something for Everybody.”

Now, that’s a generic title if I ever heard one!

The album, which consists of twelve country/pop up tempo tunes and ballads, starts off with an incredible song, “There’s Always Me!”

Elvis, sings one of his finest vocal performances that only someone like he can deliver!

Along with Floyd Cramer on piano who goes right along with him, Presley starts “There’s Always Me” almost at a whisper.

It’s a beautiful torch song where Elvis wants his love interest to know that he is waiting for her, by finishing the song after a gradual crescendo throughout, with an almost operatic full throated fortissimo that includes Cramer hammering away on the keys!

I get chills almost every time I listen to the song, and it is too good to be forgotten!
