For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)
I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.
Well, now I’m getting around to it!
My radio show, “Theme Attic,” is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.
The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!
The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.
I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.
Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”
Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!
But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.
I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.
This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

When I was a kid discovering music, Elvis Presley never really interested me.
Yes, I was familiar with him and his music.
But I knew him more as a movie star who recorded mediocre songs for his movies.
Elvis was someone that my brothers or sister might like, so I sure wasn’t going to anxiously await new music from him.
Two of his singles in 1968 were “If I Can Dream” and “In the Ghetto.” Elvis wasn’t trying to appeal to a younger audience.
Therefore, at the time, I was mostly interested in British Invasion and Bubblegum with a “little bit of soul” thrown in.
However, things changed at the beginning of 1969.
It happened so imperceptibly, that even I couldn’t detect it.
“Suspicious Minds”–a song that would become one of Elvis’ biggest hits, was released as a single, taken from his “From Elvis in Memphis” album.
I’m pretty sure I ignored it when it came on the radio.
I’m almost positive that I scanned the AM dial to find a better song.
But, like most songs back in the 60s, that heavy rotation began to have some effect. I mean, no matter how hard one tried, you couldn’t change a song every time it came on.
You might be riding in the back seat of the car and couldn’t control the dial.
Others in the car might like a song and leave it on no matter how much you whined!
So, a change might have been inevitable.
The first hook that grabbed was that inconspicuous guitar lick that opens “Suspicious Minds” and gets repeated throughout the song. Sometimes the notes change, but it’s the same riff.
It sounded to me like, “durdle lurdle lurdle durn durn.”
I know it snagged me because I kept mimicking it out loud whether the song was on or not.
Actually, initially, I was unaware I was doing it. I only know I was because I was driving my best friend crazy when we were working on some after school homework.
Apparently, I had been doing it for several days.
And I couldn’t stop even when my friend was yelling at me!
It kept playing over and over in my brain!
And, of course, from that infectious riff, it was only a matter of time before I got hooked on the rest of the song.
And, what a song!
“Suspicious Minds” is an incredible song that includes everything plus the kitchen sink!
There’s a choir of amazing back up singers!
There’s horns!
There’s strings!
There’s time changes!
Mood changes!
A fake ending! (I’ve always loved those starting with “Do You Love Me?” by The Contours!)
And rising above everything else on “Suspicious Minds” was Elvis Presley’s powerful vocal!
So much was happening all at once!
I couldn’t resist!
I took some of my paper route money, bought a copy of it, and listened to it even more heavily than radio was playing it!
I still wasn’t exactly sold on Elvis yet. That would come years later when I got hooked on rockabilly!
But “Suspicious Minds” was the first song that made me appreciate Elvis!
Also, I had zero interest in the adult lyrical content. It never registered what the song was about for several years.
One last thing: Chips Moman, the producer of the original session that produced the song, did not have the fake fade out as part of the track. That was added later by RCA producer Felton Jarvis.
Chips hated it and referred to the gimmick as a scar on the record. He thought it ruined it, much like George Martin always talked about putting the two different versions of “Strawberry Fields Forever” by The Beatles together to make the single.
Obviously, millions of Elvis fans can’t be wrong!
One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley!!!
Elvis stated many times in interviews that he loved playing “Suspicious Minds” in concert!

I’m not sure if I’ll ever get another chance, so I’m doing my own bit of publicity!
Today is the release date of the new album by The Joedai Warriors, “Turf Wars!”
Not only do I get the opportunity to be on a record with stellar local musical talent like Bill Edwards and Dave Roof, but I am also amongst a large group of superb artists from around the country like Michael Kelsey, Liz E. Brooks and the ultimate leader, Joe Peters– all under the encompassing banner and group name, The Joedai Warriors!
If you’re unfamiliar with Joe Peters and his music, he has been on my album lists in one form or another for 82 weeks at the moment!
He has had five #1 albums!
He has also had a small town of musicians contributing to his music!
And his music runs the spectrum from serious to silly!
I can’t say enough good things about him!
And I am truly honored to have my maiden flight as a Joedai Warrior be on “Turf Wars!”
Thank you, Joe Peters, Michael Kelsey, Dave Roof, and Rooftop Recording!

Here is the Official press release in Joe’s words! (“Turf Wars songs and credits follow):
The Joedai Warriors’ “Turf Wars” album set for Jan. 6 release
Coming January 6, 2022 exclusively at Turf Wars | The Joedai Warriors | Joe Peters/The Joedai Warriors (bandcamp.com)!
On the heels of his two-CD pandemic lockdown opus, Collaboration (music by warriors, zombies & other joedai pilgrims), Hoosier singer songwriter Joe Peters is set to release a new album from the confines of his home in Walnut Creek, California.
OK, you may say, a new album but why the title Turf Wars?
First, lyricist Frederick Michaels sent some lyrics to Joe for a song he’d written, Grass Ain’t Always Greener, and there was some neighborly resentment, cynicism, sarcasm and so forth in those lyrics, and the overall vibe of the song. At the root of it seemed to be different views about lawn care, you know, turf wars. Then along came songwriter Liz E. Brooks with lyrics she called Dandelions, and they too referenced different views of lawn care, but she steered away from conflict–the turf wars–by adopting a laisse faire live-and-let-live attitude, reflected in the vibe and hook of the song. So, the grounds and parameters for Turf Wars had been set, at least at the microcosmic level of individual neighbors. Meanwhile, what has been happening for some time in American society at large, the macrocosmic view, is not that different from what’s going on at the individual level: more turf wars as reflected in national politics and perhaps culminating in the January 6 insurrection at the capitol. So, the album is somewhat bookended by songs written in real time watching TV on January 6—insurrection day—and January 20—inauguration day—both competing claims to American legitimacy, or at least differing views about the future direction of the country. You know, turf wars! These elements and thoughts conspired to suggest the title.
Yet amidst the apparent Turf Wars we have Collaboration!
Joe is of course joined on this album by his long-time mentor and musical guru, Michael Kelsey, who contributes dazzling instrumentation, clever arrangements and flawless production to the endeavor. Also contributing vocals on this album are frequent collaborators Amanda Parker and Liz E. Brooks, who also plays cello on one of the tracks. Appearing as joedai warriors for the very first time are Southeast Michigan music veterans Bill Edwards, contributing background vocals on two songs, and DJ Phil Maq contributing vocals, drums and so much more on another track, while Southern California’s Nalini Lasiewicz recorded vocals on Liz’s song. Lafayette’s own George Buechley recorded pedal steel guitar on a Mike Byers penned song, and June IND bandmates, Chris June & Emily Larimer arranged and recorded awesome harmonies on Frederick Michaels’ aforementioned song. Fellow Hoosier, Cheryl Fletcher, who grew up on a Family Farm had a hand in co-writing a song by the same name, inspired by a Terry Lyons photograph.
Wonderful serendipity and goodwill also led Joe to the exquisite painting by Lafayette-area artist Dan Annarino, who also worked up the lettering.
Over the course of the 12 tracks on Turf Wars prepare to jump on board and ride the wave of emotion that is hope & despair, playful whimsy & harsh reality, loss & acceptance, tension & release. By the end of the ride, hopefully you feel fully alive and ready for the challenges ahead, challenges and rewards, like friends and family and the promise of the new year.

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.
Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET!
The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.
Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.
I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.
Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

The 2021 Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2021 Countdown started with a teriffic group of songs and artists!
And it was broadcast!!!!
That is something that I couldn’t say last year!
Since the Philby shows will probably be at least every other week this year, I still think that I will give updates in groups of ten.
When the Philbys are on a bi-weekly schedule, the unofficial updates will be every week. So, there will be weekly info about the Philbys and that’s why I chose to do it like that.
I would also like to state again that unless a song has appeared on a weekly Faves list, it will NOT show up on the final songs list.
I will also provide submission info at the end of each one of these updates!

Here’s a section on submissions:
I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!
The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.
The pool for 2021 is 2018-2021.
One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.
A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.
Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.
Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.
After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.
I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.
Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.
So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2018, I will accept that music for consideration.
If you have something older than 2018, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.
For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.
However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.
But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.
So, please don’t edit for me.
I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.
Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music. And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.
Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)
However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.
It might be an excellent year to send a submission.
I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!
So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.
If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.
If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.
If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.
If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.
Good luck to all who participate!

My weekly radio show “Theme Attic,” can be heard Wednesdays, 1PM-4PM ET!
The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!
It almost always includes a weekly countdown of my favorite albums or songs and some shows feature two countdowns!
There’s plenty of other musical things to browse on my website!
