Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 5, 2021

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

“Theme Attic” 2021 Fall New Music Showcase Pt. 3, Wednesday, 1PM-4PM EST!!!

Wednesday’s 2021 Fall New Music Showcase #3 on “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 1PM-4PM EST is the final one for the year!
That usually means several things: It will be the final Showcase for the year. An album must have a song from an album played on “Theme Attic” for it to be considered on the Philby list for the year. The last Showcase closes the door on that opportunity.
Well, sorta……………
The three hour format will leave some wiggle room for potential last minute entries! (More on that in the future!)
There’s a Top 9 at 2:09!
Here’s the stats: 11 artists with connections to Southeast Michigan!
16 artists I’ve never played before!
and 1 exception!
Songs by artists will include The Accidentals, new Hush Club, Donna Herula (Her album cover for “Bang at the Door” is on the far right in the banner!), The Hangabouts, Allison Lupton Music, new Nick Frater Music (The cover for his Big Stir Records album, “Earworms” is on the far left of the banner!), Lake Street Dive, new Barker & Broski, Jenny Reynolds (Her album cover for “Any Kind of Angel” is second from the left in the banner!), new Jennifer Naegele Music, The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters & Friends, Linda Hicks, Allison Nyquist, Alexandra Hicks, Jim Brehm, Patti McKee), new Bill Edwards (Edwardsongs) (His album cover for “61356” is second from the right in the banner! He is appearing Thursday at the Chelsea Depot in Chelsea, Michigan!), Cold Tone Harvest, Dar Williams, Jerry Price (His album cover for “Light on the Horizon” is third from the left in the banner!), Katherine Moller, new Judy Nazemetz, Sultans of String (Their album cover for “Refuge” is third from the left in the banner!), Niecie, new Moon and Bike, The Claudettes (who will be performing Thursday at The Parliament Room at Otus Supply!), Transit Method, Emily Scott Robinson, DIRK KROLL BAND, Kim Wilson, Wolf B. The station is experiencing some construction pain from time to time that will affect the FM signal.

Phil’s Faves: Albums, November 28, 2021

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

It’s the 20th Semi-Annual “Theme Attic” Hall of Fame Show, Wednesday, 1PM-6PM EST!!!

The day before Thanksgiving seems to sometime have a magical quality! (Unless you have to do a lot of cooking.)
But even making all of those scrumptious dishes takes on a magical vibe!
That makes it the perfect day to role out “The 20th Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Show with Phil Maq,” from 1PM-6PM EST!!!
Yes, that’s right!
This year I get to really spread out as I cover the “Afternoon Jazz” slot that Mr. Jags usually covers! That means that sometime after 4 o’clock the Hall of Fame Show will continue with Hall of Fame Jazz!
And each show I always include two artists that I’ve never played before. This week, Warm Chord Music and Shimmer Johnson are the lucky debuts!
Along with their contrasting styles, the other legendary artists will cover a mind numbing array of genres!!!
Songs by some artists will include Humble Pie, Nanci Griffith, Billy Brandt and the Sugaree’s, and Mavis Staples to name just a few!
They’ll be some newer tunes but also plenty of timeless classics!
I play one song from as many artists as I can from my Hall of Fame roster! (https://philmaq.com/hall-of-fame/)
This year’s show contains many songs that I have never played by the artists, and I have worked hard to find many deep cuts!
The variety should sound incredible!
Speaking of sound, the best way to make sure that you don’t miss a single note is to stream the show from the listen live button on the www.WHFR.FM website, the TuneIn App, download the 89.3 WHFR.FM android app from our website homepage, or ask Alexa to find it for you! The station is experiencing some construction pain from time to time that will affect the FM signal.
Bring some snacks, a friend to listen with, and come along for the ride Wednesday from 1PM-6PM EST with Phil Maq!
Here’s the 20th semi-annual link to stream it : https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/ !!!
Feel free to share and spread the fun!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: Bobby Pennock’s Hippie-Dippy “One Month in the Hole!!!”

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 1PM-4PM ET!

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Last year, multi Philby Award winner, Bobby Pennock, wrote a song after experiencing thirty days under pandemic lockdown conditions.

Lucky us…or we wouldn’t have his song, “One Month in the Hole!”

When he had the opportunity, he packed up his theremin and took it to Rooftop Recording!

Constructing an aural soundscape that transports the listener back to those creative psychedelic days of the 60s, Bobby laid out his feelings in song as he had endured them.

The theremin–an instrument best remembered from Grade B horor movie soundtracks, provides an otherworldly feeling that contrasts beautifully with the layered harmonies!

It’s an interesting experience to listen to “One Month in the Hole.” It’s almost like an auditory sensory deprivation tank!

And it’s also very catchy!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day and the most Hippiest-Dippiest is “One Month in the Hole” by Bobby Pennock!!!
