Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 8, 2021

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 2PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

2021 Summer New Music Showcase, Pt. 2, Wednesday 2PM-430PM!!!

Over the years, I have been a member of at least two record clubs, two cassette clubs, and two CD clubs.
Nothing could be more exciting than when I would receive a batch of new music by mail!
I rarely ordered 1 item, although that was OK, too.
Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 2PM-4:30PM EDT, will be Pt.2 of the 2021 Summer New Music Showcase!
I try to bring that sense of wonderment to the show where everything I debut is either a new album, a new artist to the show, and sometimes both!!
And even the Top 9 at 2:09 will fit that theme!
Songs by artists on the show will include Kid Gulliver, Jimmy Carpenter, The Goldsberrys, Turkuaz, DIRK KROLL BAND (Their Album cover for “Would It Be the Same” is in the middle of the banner towards the right!), Dolph Chaney, Heather Pierson, unreleased Billy Brandt with Elaine Schoendorf, Jon Shain and FJ Ventre (Their album cover for “Never Found the Way to Tame the Blues” is in the banner, second from the right!), Michael Jonathon, Victor V. Gurbo & Co., Tommy Z (His album cover for “Plug In and Play” is in the banner, on the right!), Eric Gnezda – Songwriter and Speaker, Joanna Connor Band, The Armoires (Their album cover for “Incognito” is just to the left of center in the banner!)(Big Stir Records), Joe Peters & Friends, Emily Kinney Music, George Stephen Kelly (His new album cover for “Discount Cowboy” is in the banner on the left!), Popular Creeps, Carl Caballero, Laura Rain and The Caesars, Nicollette Sullivan (Her album cover is second from the left on the banner!), Marvin Etzioni, Helene Cronin Music, ThorNton Creek, Justin Sullivan, Randy Cherkis, Kelsey Waldon, Nigel Hall, @Lucero, and King Ropes!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, August 1, 2021

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 3:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 2PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

New Key Album of the Week: “Fortune Favours the Strange” by Black Cat Revue!!!

Since my show is back on the air (“Theme Attic” heard every Wednesday from 2PM-4PM ET! Here’s a link to stream it: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!), I’ve decided to only identify a “New Key Album of the Week” and write about it if something “hits me” about the release.

When I do make a weekly choice, I will add it to my weekly Faves List as before!

Whether I consider them for future lists will depend on whether my “snap judgment” is worthy of that.

The seed for this idea came from old 60’s WKNR (Dearborn, Michigan) music guides, that featured a weekly Key Song of the Week, so it’s kind of an homage to the station.

My distinction will be a “key album.”

I hope you like the changes I have made, and together we will continue to explore new music!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

This week’s selection was released a few months ago, however it has stuck with me and the music has seeped into my gray matter!

Four Glasgow dudes have channeled late 60s and early 70s rock, like Steppenwolf, and pumped it through a lo-fi sound filter!

“Fortune Favours the Strange” by Black Cat Revue, with songs like “The Name of the Game is Kill” are almost impossible to decipher. Yet they make you want to move your body in an uncontrollable manner.

It’s almost like “Kill, Kill, Kill” by The Sacred Cows as manipulated by The Groovy Guru in “Get Smart!”

It is a perfect apocalyptic soundtrack.

I will play this song on my Wednesday show!

The New Key Album of the Week is “Fortune Favours the Strange” by Black Cat Revue!!!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I’m Phil Maq and I do a weekly College radio show, “Theme Attic” which can be heard every Wednesday from 2PM-4:15 PM ET.

Here’s a link to stream it: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

I’m on the lookout for new music and artists!

Actually, I’m looking for any and all “good music” all of the time!

If you read this and want to send me your music, please send mp3s to phil@philmaq.com!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” By Gil Scott-Heron!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 2PM-4PM ET.

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Fifty some years ago on Sunday July 23, I would normally be at a baseball game.

That was pretty much the pattern with my friends. If the Detroit Tigers were playing and I didn’t have any family plans, I would normally get everyone together and my brother would drop us off at Tiger Stadium.

We would take the bus home after the game heading north up Woodward Ave. which included a transfer at Warren Ave. and Trumbull.

At that point in time, we were still sitting in the left field grandstands. $2 a ticket if I remember correctly.

On July 23, the Tigers had their usual Sunday afternoon game. For some reason, and I can’t remember why, I didn’t go to the game. I think I wasn’t feeling well. Believe me, next to music, baseball was my next favorite interest, and it was a very close second! I must have been close to being on a deathbed. We were all just kids anywhere from 9 to 11 years old.

Surprisingly, someone else was able to arrange a ride to the game. When I talked to my friends later, they told me that you could see heavy smoke over the top of the stadium. They said they had no idea what was going on, but the game continued so they didn’t worry about it.

But they also said that the atmosphere at the ballpark was strange that day. People seemed on edge. They said the bus ride also began to get scary and they wanted to get out of there fast. People were screaming and yelling. Everyone made it home safely, but not without worry.

Of course, unknown to them or myself, the uprising had begun earlier that day. And it seemed to go on for several days that felt like an eternity.

And in a sense, it was.

Looking backward, I find that I am drawn to the music about the conflict.

Gil Scott—Heron was a jazz beat poet who made his debut a couple of years later.

He produced a song, that-at the time, summed up the feelings of frustrations for African Americans.

If a person could make the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame” on just one song, (and he had many more!), “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” would be it.

Back then, it was played about as often as a song could be played on all of the underground FM stations.

It’s self explanatory.

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” by Gil Scott-Heron!!!
