Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 13, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

The Pandemic Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2020 Has Started!!!

The Philby Award

Welcome to the 2020 Pandemic Philbys!

For the forseeable future, the Countdown of Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2020 will take a blog format.

I am presuming it will eventually change and I will then switch to radio.

But since nothing is the same right now, I have no idea when or if that will happen.

I will reveal one song per day.

If by some chance I miss a day, I will reveal two the next time I post, to avoid having a slow process get even slower.

I’m not planning to tag anyone with my daily reveal.

I will put together a partial list of progress after every twenty songs, just like I have in other years.

One last reminder: If a song by an artist isn’t on my weekly Phil’s Faves Songs List, it will NOT appear on the Philby year end list

I suggest that you “like” my Facebook page, Phil Maq, to stay up to date along the way.

And I’m still accepting submissions.

I will have this information after every Philby post.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Today’s Philby Countdown reveal is a slice of Detroit Rock N Roll!

From their “Forsaken” album, The Garden of Soul tell everyone to “Let It Roll!!! (Language Warning)

Congratulations go to The Garden of Soul!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Here’s a section on submissions:

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

This year that pool is 2017-2020.

The song selections are usually from the same range, too, but I’m a little more open to almost anything, since over time, there have been plenty of older songs that have found new life years after they’ve been recorded, even ending up on hit movie soundtracks.

Needless to say, this year is going to be unlike any year.

However, I have arrived at the realization that there will be issues every year no matter what I plan.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over what would qualify from the prior years.

Up to this point of the year, I just reached my largest batch of albums.

So, it’s basically a little over the number I used last year.

But let’s talk about this year, which is absolutely the weirdest year ever!

I haven’t even done a show for almost months!

I haven’t any idea how this will affect either list.

However, I will come up with something that makes sense.

And as large as my working list is, I know I have room for more.

I can never have enough!

Therefore, I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2017, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2016, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I hate that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Radar Contact” by TR3 Featuring Tim Reynolds!!!

I have started a new feature: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

It’s been awhile since an instrumental grabbed hold of me, but “Radar Contact” by TR3 Featuring Tim Reynolds off their “The Sea Versus the Mountain” album sure did!

In fact, the whole album is full of mostly instrumental creative rule breaking prog/jazz/rock jams!

Tim, who normally plays guitar with The Dave Matthews Band, lets his innovative juices flow with his side project, TR3.

Along with Reynolds’ skilled guitar licks, “Radar Contact” features some monster bass riffs supplied by Mick Vaughn!

And I do mean monstrously wicked funk bass!

Dan Martier brings his attentive tempo shifting, break snapping drums to the mix that makes TR3 a completely shared effort!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Radar Contact” by TR3 Featuring Tim Reynolds!!!

For the first time in the Song List, I have included Holiday songs!

Last year, the eclectic duo of Barker and Broski (Michael Snyder-Barker, Chris Broski) released a touching song, “Dollar Store Christmas,” about familes that do their best to make sure their kids have a happy Christmas, even when they don’t have the funds!

The toys have offbrand names, but the love is real!

Unfortunately, with the pandemic, this may be more common this year.

Therefore, it might be nice to keep the sentiment of the song in mind!

Congratulations to Barker and Broski for placing a song on this year’s Philby list!

A Final Reminder: Philbys Start Monday, December 14th!

The Philby Award

Everything about this post after the first few sentences as yesterday’s.

I put this together to say that the Philby Countdown blog starts tomorrow, and I’m always accepting music submissions!

At this moment, I am still working on the opening songs!

Read on for more detail:

Just a reminder, if you are an artist and you’re song hasn’t appeared on my weekly Faves Song List, it probably won’t be on the year end Philby list.

This year, it will start as a daily blog post.

You will have to click the link to find out the daily entry, however the spot in the list won’t appear.

Their will be an update after every twenty songs.

I won’t be tagging anyone until those updates!

I would suggest “liking” my page to stay up to date.

The rest of this post talks about submissions and more background.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I have decided to start this year’s Philbys on Monday, December 14th!

The Philbys are my annual awards to recognize brilliant musical achievment!

They consist of two one hundred count lists: one for songs, and one for albums.

Here’s a link to last year’s list:

To make sure that you stay up to date on any Philby activity, make sure that you “like” my Phil Maq Facebook page!

For the moment, I am going to stick to my rule of only including songs that I have played on my show, or, in some cases, on other shows or radio stations.

The majority of the songs will be from my weekly Faves Songs list.

In other words, if you’re not aware that I’ve broadcasted a song, chances are it will not be appearing on this year’s Philby list.

In general, I may not have done a show in nine months, but I still have plenty of songs to catch my attention and choose from for my Faves list.

Since I’ve never navigated through a pandemic, I don’t have a clue where we’re going, but if I feel I’m running out of songs, next year, from my pool of eligible songs, I will reevaluate things at that point.

Albums are a different story.

The rules will be changing for at least this year and 2021.

I will write more about that in another post.

However, I would suggest submitting something even if it doesn’t fall within the normal four year target span!

I would suggest reading the bottom section of the article for submissions.

The format I will follow starting on December 14th will be a Countdown from 100 to 1.

I will reveal one song and its place once a day, in consecutive order.

It won’t necessarily be at a set time.

I will post an update after every twenty songs, at a minimum.

Once again, to make sure that you stay up to date on any Philby activity, make sure that you “like” my Phil Maq Facebook page!

I am making the presumption that I will be back on the air, sometime during my blog countdown, and will then continue the Countdown on the air.

But if the pandemic prevents me from doing so, it may be a long, slow unveiling.

I’m OK with that, and I hope others will be, too.

I personally think that anyone is OK with recognition anytime it is given.

As far as “The Most Awesomest Song of the Day,” as well as “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded” choices, they will be posted, but perhaps not as often.

To recap: Philby Song rules stay the same, Philby Album rules will be changing slighly, and The Philbys begin Monday, December 14th!

December 14th????!!!

That’s next Monday!

I’d better get even busier!

Please join me on the journey!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Christmas Time’s A-Comin'” by Emmylou Harris!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Back in 1979 when I was listening to The Sex Pistols and was more interested in punk and power pop rock, I would still buy an occasional “country” album.

Often that choice would be something by multiple Philby Award winner Emmylou Harris [Hall of Fame].

And why not?

She had appeared on several Linda Ronstadt [Hall of Fame] albums along with Dolly Parton. The three would eventually form Trio.

As bad as popular music sounded at that time to someone who chose punk first, Christmas music choices were even worse!

Outside of a few recent singles, Holiday albums were often filled with the same rotating list of songs, as if they were mandatory.

And, I guess, it was a way for artists to pick up a few extra bucks by knocking off a mindlessly numb batch of songs in a couple of days.

The Carpenters had released “A Christmas Portrait” the year before. It consisted of many of the same songs, but Richard Carpenter’s creative arrangements, and the warm soothing vocals of Karen Carpenter, made the album sound fresh.

That was the first crack in the Christmas wall of music.

The second crack came with Emmylou Harris‘ Light of the Stable.”

Surprisingly, the album itself is possibly even more traditional than many of the albums I just disrespected.

Traditional bluegrass that is!

Delivered with sincerity and reverence plus honest fun, “Light of the Stable” was a sonic surprise right from Ricky Skaggs’ first mandolin notes on Bill Monroe’s “Christmas Time’s A-Comin'”–a toe tapper of a song that was made for that phrase!

Heavenly harmonies from Linda and Dolly melded beautifully with Emmylou‘s vocals!

The rest of the album was filled with a good variety of hymns that seemed familiar, but were different enough to keep my attention.

An all star cast of additional musicians like James Burton, Rodney Crowell, Glen Hardin, and Brian Ahern-who produced the album, didn’t hurt either!

Those joyous notes on Brian Bowers’ autoharp for “Christmas Times A-Comin'” pulled me in and didn’t let me go!

“Light of the Stable” became my favorite Christmas album for a long time!

It’s still one of my favorites, and I try to listen to it every year.

However, if I don’t get to it, you can be assured that I will always listen “Christmas Time’s A-Comin'” several times every year!

The album that had Emmylou Harris wearing a shawl over her head symbolically depicting herself as Mary, contained some powerful, joyous music!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Christmas Time’s A-Comin'” by Emmylou Harris!!!

My somewhat unusual Hall of Fame can be explored here: https://philmaq.com/hall-of-fame/!

The Philby Award

2019 Philby Song Award Winners

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “River of Tears” by Upstairs Party!!!

I tried to find some information for today’s selection, but it appears the party that was going on upstairs is over for them. It’s possible they disbanded.

Buried as track 7 on a self-titled mostly funk/r&b oriented album, is a sad blues shuffle.

“River of Tears” by Upstairs Party caught my attention because of the 1:19 second twin guitar lead intro.

I can listen to that sweet riff over and over!

The song itself is a woeful tale of a broken relationship.

Some additional guitar fills keep the song from drowning into a river of pedestrian blues tunes!

It feels like the perfect song for a rainy Saturday!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Feels Like Christmas” by The Wag!!!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

My radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,”  is on Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET but is on hiatus because of the pandemic.

Here’s the link for when the show returns: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

It’s time for some Friday Music Fun!

Today’s choice is one of my favorite Christmas songs! Period!

“Feels Like Christmas” by multiple Philby Award winners, The Wag, put together a wonderful tune to sing and dance to, hang lights, wrap presents, cook, or catch your breath!

Inspired by “Snoopy’s Christmas” by The Royal Guardsmen, Alicia Van Sant wanted to make a song that mirrored that spirit!

“Feels Like Christmas” perfectly captured that vibe with boundless energy and heartwarming harmonies!

The video is almost as much fun as the song!

I feel better everytime I hear it, and I hope it lifts your heart, too!

One of the greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Feels Like Christmas” by The Wag!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, December 6, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.
