It’s the Winter Olympics, Black History, and a New Inductee–The 5th Dimension on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EST!!!

Another Olympics is upon us and that gives me the opportunity to act like I have some songs about them. (I don’t)
However, I do have an active imagination, and I can have songs prepared that loosely follow some of the sports events!
Therefore, this Wednesday, “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EST, will explore the Winter Olympics! So be prepared to get your musical passport stamped again!
Also on the agenda is a Top 9 at 2:09 of this week’s Fave Albums!
Since countries all over the world compete in the Olympics, several foreign songs will be part of the mix as we enjoy our differences in music!
And to celebrate Black History month, The 5th Dimension will be inducted into the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame!” (Much more Black music will also be highlighted this week as well as next week!)
The totals for this week are 5 artist debuts, 1 new release (and several newish ones!), and 11 artists with Southeast Michigan connections!
Since the show is now 4 hours long, I will separate artists and potential sets into two paragraphs representing two hour segments. They are only possible segments. They are not chronological, and are only a guide. I often move things around and I make no promises, though they should be helpful.
Songs by artists from 12PM-2PM EST should include Nathan Kalish. Andy Baker, Kelly’s Lot, Lucas Rabel (His album cover for “Western Amber Skies” is in the middle of the banner!), Wolf B. Reuter (WolfSounds), Zoë Pollock, Tom Curless & the 46%, brand new HVOB, Deane Nesbitt Jr, The Britemores, Ariane Lydon, Joe Peters and Friends, Gogol Bordello, Justin Hayward, Tommy Sands, and many more!!!
Songs by artists in the second two hours, 2PM-4PM EST should include The 5th Dimension, Kenny Young and the Eggplants, Jeff Karoub (He plays Trinity House Theatre in Livonia, MI on Saturday as well as Bobby Pennock!), The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters), The Stone Souls,
So grab some ski wax, a friend or two to listen with, and come along for the ride Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!

Phil’s Faves, Albums, February 6, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, February 6, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2022 is 2019-2022.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2018, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2018, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

“Theme Attic” Gets Even Biggerer!!! Now Four Hours Long!!! Wednesdays, 12PM-4PM EST!!!

Starting this Wednesday, February 9th, there will be another addition to the Attic!

Theme Attic” that is!

Another additional 60 minutes will turn the show into a whopping 4 hours, from 12PM-4PM EST!

Hosted by DJ Phil Maq, “Theme Attic” is a multi genre show often loosely based on a subject, hence the name.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Metro Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

“Theme Attic” has been a staple at the station for more than 11 years!

The show features a variety of music that seems to select itself. DJ Phil Maq then becomes the conduit for the songs to make its way to the station’s loyal listeners, providing his own quirky stories and info to connect the artists and tunes!

Along with musical subjects, “Theme Attic” has weekly Countdowns–for example, a Fave Albums List, and often features two!!

The expanded length will allow for more interviews as well as even more of the music created by independent artists that “Theme Attic” has become recognized for!

The rumor is that New Music Showcases, a recurring topic on the show, will be biggerer, too!

Phil Maq, when questioned by this reporter about that possibility, seemed visibly agitated about the query.

“Holy [bleep]!” was his initial response. “That’s like twice the size of what they used to be only a few months ago!”

After appearing to regain his composure, he slyly smiled, winked, and then added, That’s a whole mess of new music to be explored and debuted! I guess I better get busy!

Giving the expanded show opportunity a little more thought, Mr. Maq, the creator of the Philby Awards (Philbys are non time constrained annual awards for both songs and albums that are recognized for “brilliant musical achievements.), excitedly stated, “That means that, potentially, the Philby pool will be even larger! That’s great!

And they’ll plenty more times that local artists and favorites can be played! ”

After a pause, he continued, “Hey, that’s better than great! “More time on my show gets me closer to my goal of playing every song that’s worth playing, no matter when it was released, on the radio!”

That truly is one crazy, noble goal!

Judging by his prior track record and previous playlists, “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq, on Wednesdays between Noon and 4PM ET is anticipated to exceed expectations in both music, fun, and variety!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

One of the brightest, hopeful songs to ever be recorded came roaring out of 1965!

And it wasn’t by The Beatles!

“I Got You Babe,” an unexpected hyper-waltz (6/8 time) by a relatively unknown husband and wife duo, Sonny & Cher,  literally took over the radio when it was released!

In addition to the unusual time signature, the song prominently featured an oboe and glockenspiel!

The tambourine work is one of the best, and Hal Blaine, as part of the Wrecking Crew, gives an incredible performance on drums.

Sonny Bono, who wrote the song, gives the weakest performance on “I Got You Babe.” However, there is so much continually happening that the listener doesn’t even have time to notice it.

And speaking of vocals, Cher delivers a flawless, heartfelt performance on the bridge…as the song changes keys!

I feel it is her best performance!

“I Got You Babe” is part of a recurring joke in the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray. It plays every morning when his alarm clock goes off. It is a favorite movie of everyone in my family!

And even as many times as I’ve heard the song including the movie, I have never grown tired of it!

The use of echo and dynamics, the pauses and rhythm changes, and the innocent lyrics all lead to an enjoyable experience!

The song always feels very romantic and I have never grown tired of it!

And I am glad that I get to remember it’s wonderfulness every year at Groundhog Day!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher!!!
