The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Save All My Cryin’ (For Sunday Afternoons)” by Vicky Emerson!!!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

Please share the post to help spread the word!

Regardless of everything going on in the world that is way more important than my daily post, I will continue, nonetheless, in case someone is looking for a few minutes of respite.

How about a Sunday afternoon song?

Today’s song is one of those that truly didn’t knock me out until I played it on my radio show.

I feel that songs have different “impacts,” not only for lyrics that can change meaning over time and situations, but also for the way that a song is heard.

For example, I certainly have changed my opinion about a song that I didn’t like or understand until I heard it live. And almost always for the better!

Some of the feelings about a song for me depends on whether I’m hearing it with earbuds, in my car, computer, when I play it on my show, or if I hear it on the radio–but not on my show.

I have changed my opinion about music when I’ve heard someone else play something I didn’t seem to care for, but it sounded good on the radio.

I have bought several albums over the years that sounded great in the record store, but lost their magic when I brought them home and played them. Very sad!

I only chose to discuss this because the song itself hasn’t changed, only the surroundings!

For me, this is an odd phenomenon!

But let’s get back to today’s song.

Vicky Emerson‘s “Save All My Cryin’ (For Sunday Afternoons” from her Philby Award winning, Wake Me When the Wind Dies Down,” was an easy choice for one of my “new music shows.”

But what really caught my attention was the flat out classic country feel of the song when I played it on my show!

The structure is set up so nicely: The tremolo guitar! The mournful fiddle! Vicki’s singular vocal during the verses, wrapped around a beautiful harmony vocal (Wonderfully done by Annie Fitzgerald!) for the chorus! The melody is pretty, and the middle eight makes it sound even better!

I’m not much for weepers or sad songs in general, but “Save All My Cryin”’ makes me want to sing along, and singing always makes me feel better!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Save All My Cryin’ (For Sunday Afternoons)” by Vicky Emerson!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “In the Middle” by Diana Chittester!!!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I first stumbled upon multiple Philby Award winner Diana Chittester through Facebook.

I observed a snappy conversation between her and and multiple Philby Award winner G.S. Harper!

The good natured jabs were flying between the two, and it was fun to follow the witty repartee!

I found out Diana was a singer/songwriter and that she occasionally passed through this area.

When I finally got a chance to see her at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I was unprepared for her stage presence.

She told stories about her songs that were helpful but extremely personal.

Diana also couldn’t stand still when she played!

She prowled the stage like a feline, and with her long flowing dark hair, reminded me of seeing the most beautiful black puma I will ever see extremely close-up at a zoo in The Quad Cities when it first opened!

Diana poured every ounce of energy from those movements into the feelings of her music!

It also brought to mind radio commercials about the first time Jimi Hendrix came to town. He was described as, ‘You’ll never see anyone play guitar in more positions!”

“In the Middle” from her Paradoxalbum, is a straight up mid tempo rocker!

It’s the type of song that demonstrates Diana’s evolving artistry!

The band is tight with a wicked slide guitar solo and nice touches of organ!

The rhythm section is in the pocket with several breaks and nice dynamics!

And there is a powerful vocal that can only be delivered by one Diana Chittester!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “In the Middle” by Diana Chittester!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 19, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 19, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Hot in the City” by Billy Idol!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

Some songs just feel right!

“Hot in the City” by Billy Idol is one of them!

I usually play this song a couple of times a summer depending on how hot the summer is!

It’s such a blast to roam around in a city when the sun goes down and it still feels like it’s daytime. The city has a life of its own!

And it doesn’t matter which city!

Las Vegas! Chicago! Toronto! Houston! Seattle! San Antonio! L.A.! Austin!

San Francisco! Nashville! New Orleans! Memphis! New York City! And, yes, Detroit!

And so many more!

I love the mountains and the wilderness, but I also love the city!

My wife loooooves this song!

Unknown to her, I like it, too!

For some reason, and this happens to me with a few songs over time, I got confused with this song and “Hot Child in the City”by Nick Gilder–which is an awful song compared to ‘Hot in the City.

When she forgot which song she liked, I swore that it was the Gilder song and not this one.

She never forgives me for that!

Anyway, the soulful backup vocals that sound like their coming up through the asphalt, the cheesy keyboards, the hand claps, the bass line, and Billy‘s command of the scene combine to make a perfect summer night song!

The song never sounds like an Idol song to me. It always reminds me of Mink DeVille!

But nonetheless, it is a gem!

I have been known to turn the volume all the way down when he shouts “New York” and shout out,

“DETROIT!!!”

or whatever city we’re in!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Hot in the City” by Billy Idol!!!

The Most Awsomest Song of the Day: “He Lifts Me Up” by Randy Tessier!!!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

How ’bout some Sunday Singin’?

Let’s stay local again.

Randy Tessier, a multiple Philby Award winning artist, has been a part of the Southeast Michigan music scene since he moved here from Marquette, notching out a musical career covering a variety of styles.

His latest album release, “Sugar Town,” (and, yes, that is a cover of the Nancy Sinatra song), includes a swampy, gospel(!!!???) groove, “He Lifts Me Up!”

Randy always sounds like he could lead a gospel group any day of the week!

Throw in a wicked sax solo, some hot keyboard fills, and, naturally, hand claps, and this song will definitely lift you up!

It does for me!

Multiple Philby Award winner, Tosha Owens, can slip surreptitiously between musical genres quite successfully, but eventually she reveals her true self!

On the title track of Wrong Side of Right,” she cuts loose with a vocal that touches the soul much like bare feet touching asphalt on a summer day: searing heat!

The band matches Tosha’s  hard knock fierceness led by Brett Lucas‘ flamethrowing guitar and a brilliant drum break towards the end of the song!

How about some Friday Music Fun?

Here’s a song that everyone in my family likes!

That’s very unusual!

Multiple Philby Award winning local singer/songwriter Mark Jewett has a dry/wry sense of humor, that comes across on his less serious songs!

“Just One Clue,” from his ‘Love Has No Heart of Its Own” EP, is a mid tempo rocker about a guy who can’t seem to figure out what has upset his significant other.

He’s more than willing to resolve the situation, but he needs a clue.

The song has a really nice percussion track featuring cowbell and tambourine supplied by Nolan Mendenhall! It’s a little more interesting and intricate than just keeping a beat, and I find it entertaining every time!

There’s some really nice guitar work, too, including some hot slide guitar–all provided by Roscoe!

As the song fades out, Mark can be heard talking to himself about his socks on the floor, a new haircut that he might not have noticed, or a missed birthday!

“Just One Clue” sounds like a song that a different Mark–Mark Knopfler, accidentally left off of one of his albums!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Just One Clue” by Mark Jewett!!!
