Phil’s Faves: Songs, May 17, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Our Lips Are Sealed” by The Go-Go’s!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

I have always done two “Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Shows” a year on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

On days that I spotlight a greatest song, it will take the place of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

Time is a funny thing.

When you’re living in the moment, it’s easy to get distracted by more important crucial priorities, and lose focus on the musical soundtrack of  your life.

But, if you’re lucky, eventually things settle down, and you get a chance to reassess your music choices.

I guess I’m talking about myself more than you, the reader.

And fortunately, I was in on The Go-Go’s right from the beginning!

“Beauty and The Beat” was a wise State Discount purchase that brightened a somewhat darker time of my life.

However, the spirited bouncing rhythms and tight harmonies of Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Shock, and Kathy Valentine pulled me through the summer of 1981!

They were fun to follow!

They had a snarky flippant attitude!

And they appeared to be an organic all female band, not gimmicky like The Runaways.

Yes, I’m familiar with many other legendary female groups like Fanny or The Slits.

But The Go-Go’s had something all those other bands didn’t: A hit record!

“Our Lips Are Sealed” is the equivalent of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by The Beatles!

It was an innocent song for the times, but it blew open the doors in the music world!

“I Want to Hold Your Hand” started the British Invasion! Guys wanted to make music and be in bands!

“Our Lips Are Sealed” showed that women bands were viable and could make money!

And groundbreaking they were!

The Go-Go’s are still the only female band that wrote their own songs and played their own instruments that has had a #1 album on Billboard! And they stayed there for six weeks with one of the greatest debut albums ever!

That album and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in 1982 were the explosions that had girls wanting to make music and be in bands!

And it continues today!

The importance of this song cannot be underestimated!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Our Lips Are Sealed” by The Go-Go’s!!!

Here’s a bonus version of the song performed twenty years later by The Go-Go’s!

The innocence and playfulness is fun in the original video. I love the confidence in the live version!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Linda Paloma” by Jackson Browne!!!

“The Pretender” by Jackson Browne [Hall of Fame] was the first album of his that I bought.

At the time, I never really cared for “Doctor My Eyes.”

The next song I remember hearing by him was “Redneck Friend.” It had a good melody with some nice slide guitar, so he gained a few points with that one.

And that was it for a few years.

I don’t remember anything from “For Everyman” or “Late for the Sky” ever being played on FM radio. I also don’t remember hearing the songs of his that Linda Ronstadt recorded. I heard his name mentioned with Linda, but that was it.

So, I ended up buying The Pretender the first weekend it was released without hearing a single track.

Why?

Well, it was a time in my life when I finally had a few bucks and an addictive behavior: buying any music I could get my hands on, and I could always get more music if I bought it on the first weekend it was released!

Of course, my few dollars weren’t unlimited, and I’m pretty sure I hemmed and hawed about buying it. But I liked the picture of Jackson on the cover in that plain white t-shirt, sticking out amongst all of the other drab colors that made him stick out even more–like a scoop of vanilla ice cream at Baskin Robbins! And I guess I identified with it. Music Stop got a few more of my dollars and I went home with a classic!

Now, it didn’t hit me right off, but after a few listens, the lyrics and the songs started to weave its magic on me.

One of the things I really liked about Jackson Browne is that he took his time getting to his destination, but the ride was worth it, too.

Such mellow grooves that seemed like breathing!

Great musicians and musicianship!

One song quickly stood out to me, mostly because it didn’t sound like the others. The first plucked strings by an awesomely talented harpist is proof of that. The heavily Mexican flavored song, “Linda Paloma,” just carried me away, especially when the fiddles representing the wind come in on the lyric Like a wind that comes up in the night!”

I’m gone! I’m transported to Mexico, maybe in a cantina!

Browne’s sad vocals never quite reach the heights that he wished for his Mexican dove in “Linda Paloma!”

There’s no other song that sounds like this to me.

The arrangement is perfect!

I eventually worked backwards and picked up the previously mentioned. True classics themselves!

But I never have learned to like “Doctor My Eyes.”

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “What a Difference a Day Makes” by Dinah Washington!!!

Mostly because of her perfect enunciation, Dinah Washington  [Hall of Fame] has one of  the most distinctive voices in music.

“What a Difference a Day Makes” does not sound right to me if she’s not singing it.

There’s always something to learn whenever you do some research about something, and I learned that “What a Difference” started out as a Spanish song in 1934, written by Mexican songwriter, Maria Grever!

American songwriter and lyricist Stanley Adams, who’s in the Songwriters Hall of Fame  for the many songs that he wrote with Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, and many others, wrote the lyrics for the song we know today!

My favorite part of the song is-well, everything!

The string arrangement is so wonderful!

The muted brushes on the drums are outstanding!

And when the beautiful melody, string arrangement, background vocals, and Dinah Washington all come together, it truly is a blissful moment!

I like to think that if there is a string section in heaven, it sounds like the one on this song!

Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “What a Difference a Day Makes” by Dinah Washington!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Bringing in the Light” by Gathering Sparks!!!

I have started a new feature: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Today’s choice really speaks to me in these pandemic times.

It’s a beautiful song by Gathering Sparks from their beautiful “All That’s Real” album.

The band consists of two people, Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis, who intertwine tight harmonies, catchy melodies, and inspiring lyrics!

I don’t get to use the phrase “inspiring lyrics” very often.

But in a world where a lot of people don’t know how to think anymore, and like to support outright lies and frauds, it’s difficult for them to tell “all that’s real”

It seems like a continuous nightmare that we can’t wake up from.

The darkness feels he palpably heavy.

This is the perfect spot for “Bringing in the Light!”

Check out these lyrics:

“We are bringing in the light/

We are singing through the longest night/

Keep the fire burning/

Have faith we are returning/

Returning to the light!”

Wow! That is a powerful positive hopeful message!

I need it!

I think we all need it!

The song has a churchy Sunday morning feel!

Eve Goldberg personally handed me the album.

I am so glad and honored that she trusted me with their music!

Peace be unto all of you!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Lock Down Blues” by The Kramer-Paul Band!!!

I have started a new feature: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Another brand new song is today’s choice!

Two artists combine to form a quarantine duo!

Multi Philby Award winner Magic Kramer, a valued session musician and producer, who can bend your ears with stories about Ray Charles and B.B. King–if you’re lucky!, along with singer/songwriter Mark Paul, who has great musicians like legendary guitarist, Albert Lee on his latest recording, “Under the Memphis Sky,” teamed up to form The Kramer-Paul Band!

Their first release is a straight up Classic Rock Led Zeppelin/Whitesnake sounding jam about being sheltered in place on “Lock Down Blues!

The song starts out with Magic on mandolin while Mark Paul lays his blues/rock vocal on top!

Then the thundering John Bonham-like drums kick in, Kramer riffs, and then wails on a rock solid guitar solo! (Nice harmonics, too!)

If you pay attention to the silly DIY video–which I find totally amusing, apparently Mark Paul also plays some “heavy” tambourine!

Man, I like this song!

I am absolutely feeling it, and I’m sure many others are, too!

It is with a rock heavy heart that The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Lock Down Blues” by The Kramer-Paul Band!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “New Wave Apocalypse” by Xposed 4Heads!!!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

How about some Friday Music Fun?

The first song I ever heard by Xposed 4Heads was a little ditty called “Party in My Pants.”

It made me laugh and really wasn’t vulgar, so I thought, if I ever ran across anything else by them, I’d check it out.

But the expectations bar was oh, so low.

The next release after the initial collection, “Annoying Stuff,” was “Dumb Music for Smart People” that included “Rewind Your Behind.”

That was followed by “Choose to Be Human”–a very solid album!

Next up was a truly classic Halloween song, that I think is one of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded, “Save All Monsters”–a song I play every year!

So, a band with a passion for Devo, hailing from Milwaukee and Kansas City, continued to evolve. Xposed 4Heads were able to balance their seeming silliness with underlying brilliance on their next album, “Urgency Squad!”

And that line continues through their most recent album, “Ultra Cloud.”

Well, the band, even during these quarantine times, has put together a fun new release and a cheesy DIY video, warning us about a “New Wave Apocalypse!”

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the 80’s, Xposed 4Head with the help of their back up singers, The Star Girls,  make it less so, by name checking a slew of bands from that era!

It’s silly fun by a band that continues to amaze!

“Now we’re all “devo!”

Sometimes you just need to lose myself in a good rock song!

Today’s selection is by a band from Austin, TX.

Go Fever released an EP last year called, “Daydream Hawker,”

Lead singer Acey Monaro and the rest of the band are definitely in the pocket on this song, featuring a solid guitar solo!

The sound reminds me of “Scandal’s” first two albums!

Lately this has been a go to song if I want to hear something rockin’!

I am happy to announce The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Feel So Much” by Go Fever!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, May 10, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Brighter” by Sarah Morris!!!

Sarah Morris is one of the best songwriters I know!

Her attention to detail helps her paint a song picture in your mind like very few people can!

Sarah Morris is one of the best performers I will ever see in my lifetime!

She has the best control of her voice and dynamics–from a whisper, to maximum no microphone room volume, without losing any of its nuance! She’s right there with Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt, two performers that I’ve seen live, that had that kind of control!

Sarah reminds me of one of my favorite musicians, Nanci Griffith! These are the highest compliments I can give an artist!

And she does it all while hauling around a guitar case that sometimes seems larger than she is!

Positive vibes radiate from her, and I find it hard to believe that she is ever down!

I have gushed too much, so let’s shift to today’s selection.

Sarah has a brand new album that I had been featuring on my show until the world stopped moving, called, “All Mine.” It shows her evolving musical talent, and it’s still on my weekly Faves list, after holding the #1 spot for a couple of weeks!

I can feature several songs from that album, but in these unfamiliar days where everything seems unreal, I want to reach back to a song from her “Ordinary Things” album.

Enjoying small things in life with someone that makes them seem even better, is truly a joy and a gift, much like Sarah and her song!

We all need more of this in our own lives–pandemic or normal!

If you listen to this song on a dreary day, it will lift your spirits!

If you hear this song on a hopeful, clear day, like today (in Michigan), everything seems, well, brighter!

With a vocal as crystal clear as today’s sky, The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Brighter” by Sarah Morris!!! (Woo-hoo!)
