The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Crazy” by The Slackers

Like most everyone else, I have been occupying my time during this forced stationary survival segment, doing various things that I’ve done before, but wishing I could do more.

With WHFR only playing Classical music and with my show on hiatus, I don’t have too many options to present music in a way that I feel might have an impact.

I am continuing my weekly Faves lists for songs and albums, so that won’t be changing.

I ran across a musician posting about how he was examining the new meaning his song lyrics seemed to be telling him, as he was singing them under these new life circumstances. (If I could remember who it was, I would tell you.)

I found that interesting because was having similar feelings with music that I was listening to.

Eventually, I got an idea: I could do a “song of the day!”

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music. Just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns. Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Therefore, I am happy to announce:

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!”

I don’t intend to say too much about the selections. Just a few short, sweet sentences.

I’m not even sure if I’ll do it everyday…but I might. I mean, I had an idea for an album review last week and I still haven’t gotten around to it.

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

How about a darker song?

Today’s selection was actually written several years ago. 2006 to be exact, however, it was re-released last year. It doesn’t matter because the lyrics sound as if they were written yesterday, or during any dark phase of global angst!

It’s a minor key ska tune by The Slackers from their “Peculiar” album. Ironically, the band features Vic Ruggiero as their frontman, whose album “This” is on my “Best Albums of 2014” list!

It is a small world after all!

The song goes through my mind a lot these days, and I listen to it quite often.

It’s a gloom and doom song that you makes you want to dance while you sing along mindlessly to the chorus–at least in my world!

There’s a lot of horns and great solos!

If the Apocalypse has a soundtrack, this song will be on it!

It is with some trepidation that I announce The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Crazy” by The Slackers!!!

We stay in the Detroit area for today’s selection.

Jeff Scott has one of the best male voices I’ve ever heard!

It’s powerful when it needs to be, and he always has it under control–like all legendary singers.

His most recent album is called “NOLA to New York,” and this song hit me today!

It starts off on a catchy bass riff with the drummer tapping out a beat on the sides of his drums.

When the chorus kicks in, you might as well hang on for the ride!

The arrangement weaves horns, keyboards, and guitar in and out with nice dynamics!

The whole song is a happy, funky jam!

I am happy to announce that The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Sanctified Man” by Jeff Scott!!!

Tosha Owens has won many awards over the years!

She has a voice that, when you hear it, makes your heart want to strive to do better!

That makes Tosha’s collaborations with Detroit Strong Music featuring song’s written by Keith Laurin, truly special events! They are both interested in raising Detroit’s image and, indirectly, everyone else’s!

Even though “We’ve Got hate on the Run” is currently on my weekly Faves list, it deserves its own spotlight.

It is a musical tour-de-force combining R&B and Gospel with Classical elements!

I am happy to announce “The Most Awesomest Song of the Day”: “We’ve Got Hate on the Run” by Tosha Owens and Detroit Strong Music!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Declined” by The Claudettes!!!

It’s been almost two years since The Claudettes have been on my Faves list, but they come roaring back with a brand new album, “High Times in the Dark!”

The band’s sophomore release features a song that was not specifically written for the “Me Too Movement,” but contains many of the same elements.

“Declined” has a wicked infectious shuffle groove driven by Johnny Iguana playing the wildest piano this side of Andy Newman of Thunderclap Newman! (Look it up!)

The video for the song features many archival TV and movie clips of men “sweating it out.”

Lead singer Berit Ulseth gives a smoldering vocal performance as she looks so sensual boppin’ to the music!

In the end, she lets her potential suitors know that they don’t even have a “Dumb and Dumber” one-in-a-million chance:

“On behalf of womankind/You’re declined!”

On a side note, drummer Michael Caskey appears to be having more fun than should be allowed!

Zach Verdoorn provides the guitars!

Here’s “The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!”: “Declined” by The Claudettes!!!

Aww shucks! I looked it up for you! Here’s a bonus song, “Something in the Air” by Thunderclap Newman!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, April 12, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET. Temporarily on hiatus.) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

Here’s a link:

http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “True True True” by The Forty Nineteens!!!

How about some Friday Music Fun?

Today’s song has been on my player for a few months. It’s also another example of why I started this category!

There’s about three thousand songs on the player right now, so I’ve only heard it a few times. It hadn’t caught my attention yet.

But it sure did today!

As I’m listening to the song and it’s exploding in my brain, I’m thinking, “This is GREAT! This is AWESOME! This is like the greatest song The Who never released!!!”

And then, when I go to see if it’s on youtube, I find that not only is the song there, but there’s a really sweet video for the song!

The video is a homage not only to Mods and Rockers and Radio Caroline, but also The Who!

Hey, I might be late to the party. It wouldn’t be the first time and it won’t be the last.

But I’m not too late to name “True True True” by The Forty Nineteens

“The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!!!”

Today, “The Most Awesomest Song of the Day” is the exact reason I started this category!

It’s brand new and I just received it yesterday!

Normally, I would sit on this song until I had a theme that fit it.

But this song is as current as anything out there!

And it sends a “Thank you!” in music to all the essential workers, from the gas station attendant who cleans the restrooms, all the way to the most skilled paramedics, nurses, and doctors!

Eric Gnezda‘s best songs explode in your heart as you listen to them!

“True Heroes” is one of them!

It also features the amazing talents of Arkadiy Gips on violin, and Dave Powers on piano!

I hope you explore my daily picks with me, and that I can take your mind away–at least for a few minutes, from what’s happening in the world today!

Introducing: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!!!

Like most everyone else, I have been occupying my time during this forced stationary survival segment, doing various things that I’ve done before, but wishing I could do more.

I’ve had stretches in my life where I’ve been sick for months or laid off, so I had an idea what this would be like. I knew I would stay in my shorts or sweatpants all day and do some tasks. But I also knew I’d fill that vacuum, and time would pass much too quickly.

That’s why I’ve never had any plans to retire. That, and the fact that I’ll have to work ten years after I’m dead to pay back what I owe!

I would rather stay in motion.

You know. Newton’s first law.

So, during the past month, my downtime was initiated because I got sick, which led to a self-quarantine.

It lasted a few weeks, but I’m over that now.

No, I did not have the virus—as far as I know. I think it was a bad cold. I never had a fever.

I’m on the rebound now, and I have given some subconscious thinking as to how I can contribute to the isolated music scene.

I found that interesting because I was having similar feelings with music that I was listening to.

Eventually, I got an idea: I could do a “song of the day!”

Now, I’ve seen plenty of people posting a song of the day on Facebook, so it’s not a novel idea.

And, usually, a lot of the song picks weren’t novel either. Typically, the selection was some old overplayed selection that I’ve heard enough for two lifetimes!

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music. Just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns. Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

My whole life has pretty much been a quest to find “good” music.

Of course, that is a subjective term and open to interpretation.

April 11 was my ninth anniversary for my blog.

I have posted 1,620 entries in that span.

I have shown my work and my thoughts.

I feel comfortable that I have a pretty good ear for a quality song!

My approach for my show has always been to treat it like I’m the programmer for my own radio station. You know—Phil Radio aka “Theme Attic.”! That’s where the weekly lists come from. I have always liked music lists and countdowns!

But a two hour show is a very short time frame. There are plenty of songs that could make a longer faves list. I prefer bite sizes, so a Top Ten works for me.

But there are also songs, deep cuts if you will, that are fantastic and could survive repeated plays, but don’t “deserve” a lesser placing than the other Fave songs.

There’s another thing at play here and it involves how I handle the newest music I run across.

I am very methodical in my process. Sort of.

I use an mp3 player to listen to music that I want to work into a show. At the moment, I have about 450 albums on it.

Although I devote shows to seasonal New Music Showcases (about once a month) where I heavily try to play the latest music, it doesn’t drive my other show playlists which I try to construct much like an artist or a band constructs their album sequencing. New is important, but only to a certain point. Good and themes are the driving forces for me.

Sometimes it takes a while before I get around to playing someone’s new music on my show.

Sometimes it takes a while before someone’s song or album gets on my lists.

Besides all of the other new music I listen to on a daily basis, I am constantly listening to the music on my player. Over and over again.

If it’s not on my player, I don’t even consider the music for a show. It’s my system. However, the system is always in flux. When I play a song, it typically is removed unless I think it might make a Fave songs list. Or, I have flat out bonded with it.

I also have plenty of those on my player, too.

Typically, I work slowly and methodically, and always with the Philbys in mind.

Some of these songs have spoken to me, and they need an outlet.

Therefore, I am happy to announce the initial offering known as:

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!”

I like the flexibility of a song of the day!

I can offer brand new recommendations before I play them on my show!

I can spotlight youtube performances that I’m not allowed to play on my show!

And videos!

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 spotlights if I want to!

And I may even, occasionally, spotlight one of those overplayed songs I referred to earlier. I like most Classic Rock. But my thinking is: I don’t mind visiting the past, but I don’t want to live there!

This journey will begin with an older song.

A few days ago, Joe Peters of The Joedai Warriors, posted a song by Kevin Welch—a favorite artist of mine! His post made me think of “Life Down Here on Earth.”

There are so many great lines in this song including, “I killed a lot of time/That was my greatest sin/But I forgave myself and I’m alive again!” and the verse at the end, “There’s gonna be two dates on your tombstone/All your friends will read ’em/But all that’s gonna matter is that little dash between them!”

And it has The Fairfield Four on vocals!

The virus has changed almost everybody’s life all over the world. But many people continue to do wonderful things, and no matter whatever you do, it’s what you do during that little dash that still matters!

I hope you explore my daily picks with me and that I can take your mind away from what’s happening in the world today!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, April 12, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8PM-10PM ET! (Temporarily on hiatus)

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!
