“Are You Listening?”: A New Album By Billy Brandt and Sarana VerLin (Hint: You Should Be!)

Image result for are you listening billy brandt and sarana verlin images

It’s been almost four years to the day since the last brilliant Billy Brandt album, “The Time Is Now.” (Philby award winner.)

It’s been almost five years since the last “Billy Brandt and Sarana VerLin collaboration, “Goin’ Home.” (Pre Philby awards) That wait is now over!

“Are You Listening?” by Billy Brandt and Sarana VerLin has just been released and it’s worth the wait.

The album features well crafted songs that glisten with spirit as both Billy and Sarana alternate lead vocals and songs. The mix works incredibly well and almost feels like a “songwriters in the round” session.

Brimming with confidence, “Are You Listening?” moves seamlessly from song to song. The opening track, “Ophelia” sets the pace for the whole album. It’s a haunting melody, perhaps inspired by her namesake in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” that features Sarana’s lighter lead vocals with Billy’s earthy harmonies offsetting, but complementing hers. They continue to swap lead and harmony throughout the album.

“Judgment Day” covers territory similar to what Leonard Cohen mined on some of his last recordings. It’s not as bleak as his, but it’s definitely the grittiest song on the album.

It’s kinda fun to hear both artists share their influences throughout the album. Brandt never steers too far from his folk/rock roots of The Byrds, Gram Parsons/The Flying Burrito Brothers, and The Grateful Dead, to name a few. Sarana has both classical, rock, and Celtic influences to draw upon, and they push each other to leave those influential comfort zones.

I personally like what was done with “Sailing Away,” a medley of two separate tracks pushed together in the best George Martin compromise!

Sarana’s violin provides warmth to “Everything’s Falling” and “Can’t Let Go.”

There are so many great songs to choose from, but the artwork itself, put together by Sarana, is both mystical and interesting!

“Are You Listening?” ponders the question. My advice is to say, “yes” and determine for yourself that this album is in an elite category!

Day 7 of New Rotation Albums List: “Get Well” by Birth of Joy!!!

Related image

Wow! Another Dutch band in recent rotation list joining “Vandenberg’s MoonKings!” I guess it’s obvious where some of the best new rock comes from!

This is Day 7 of my “New Rotations: Albums” list! These are albums that are still in my listening rotation beyond what I would consider to be a normal run on my music player. They are post influence forming, but are awesome nonetheless! They should have been deleted long ago to make room for other music, yet I like them so much, I break my own rules for this music.

When Birth of Joy released “Get Well” in February of 2016, I had already been a fan for a couple of years. I had picked their last album, “Prisoner” as the #11 Philby Award winning best album of 2014! I bonded with the hard rock grooves of the album as well as their trippy psychedelic adventures. That album stayed in my rotation list for several years, too!

Fast forward a couple of years to when “Get Well” came out. The album was a solid followup featuring many of the same approaches as “Prisoner.” My initial impression was that it was a very good album, but lacked the songs that could be used as “singles” like “Mad Men” and “Rock and Roll Show.”

However, since that time, just like classic albums from the 60s and 70s, it kept growing on me and still does to this day. It’s unsettling as to melodies that go up or down in unusual patterns—with harmonies(!), like on “Choose Sides.” “Numb” starts out with a ton of quiet atmosphere sounding like “Meddle” era Pink Floyd. But don’t worry. The rock isn’t far behind! Then it’s back to more mellow atmospherics. There’s plenty of great dynamics throughout the album!

“Midnight Cruise” and “You Got Me Howling” sound like “Fireball”/”Machine Head” era Deep Purple.

Birth of Joy are not just Classic Rock imitators. They refer to their style of music as “sixties on steroids.” That’s a pretty bold statement to live up to, but band members Kevin Stunnenberg (Vocals & Guitar), Bob Hogenelst (drums & backing vocals), and Gertjan Gutman (organ & bass) more than live up to it by using their own creative approaches. Here’s a line from their own biography:

Influenced by psychedelica, blues and steaming rock&roll this trio takes you back to the old times of MC5, The Doors and even Pink Floyd!”

Any current band that references the MC5, as well as The Doors, and Pink Floyd has my attention!

I’m pretty sure “Get Well” will continue to be on my rotation list for the near future and beyond!

Here’s a sample from 2016 Philby award winner, “Get Well”: Philby award winner, “Meet Me at the Bottom”:

Just like with Dylan McDonald and The Avians albums, Birth of Joy’s albums are two of the best of the past 10 years, this century, this millennium…

Phil’s Faves: Albums, May 13, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, May 13, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Semi-Annual “Theme Attic Hall of Fame” Show, Wednesday Morning, 10A-12 Noon EDT!!!

It only happens twice a year, the middle of May and the middle of November. It’s the shows when I take the Theme Attic Hall of Fame artists out to play to put their greatness on display!

Outside of new songs by Lissie and Van William who will be playing Thursday, May 17th at The Ark – Ann Arbor (I have passes for the show so call me at 313-85-9676) when I get started to claim them!), everything else on Wednesday morning’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 10A-12 Noon EDT will be classic hits, deep cuts, or anything else I can think of!!!

Feel free to make a suggestion, but it has to be a song by artists on my Hall of Fame list!

I know by my banner that there will also be songs by Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, and Black Sabbath (How’s that for variety?!), as well as Ten Years After – Band, Jonathan Richman (Happy Birthday!), Yusuf / Cat Stevens, Nick Lowe, Ray Charles, Link Wray, and who knows what else! Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special Hall of Fame link: https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use Tune In Player to stream it.

Day 6 of New Rotation Albums List: “Out From the Door” by Dylan McDonald and The Avians!!!

Image result for dylan mcdonald and the avians out from the door images

When I first started at WHFR, I thought I knew new music. I always purchased music by bands I didn’t know. The weekly ads from Best Buy, Target, and Circuit City were my road map.

Now I was also smart enough to realize that the big box stores also had connections to big labels who were working together with the businesses, so they weren’t my only music sources.

I made weekly visits, at least, to both Switched on CDs in Novi, Michigan and Dearborn Music in Dearborn, Michigan. These were the true sources of my new or almost new music as well as back catalog purchases—especially the used section.

As hard as I worked at staying on top of the music scene, it was nothing close to what happens at a College Radio station. I would say that upwards of two hundred albums a week comes into the station as a physical release or digital file, and that includes all genres.

I have no idea whether that’s a lot or low on the new release scale, but I think it’s a pretty good cross section of any current music scene.

As a new DJ, it takes a while to get up to speed at a station that emphasizes new music.

So, I would sample as many new albums as I could any time I was there, and started latching on to artists I liked—usually through a song or two that caught my ear. It was similar to the way that I listened to music in my personal life. I had a Pioneer 6 CD player which usually provided enough material for me, as well as the variety I crave by using the random function.

I listened to music that way for many years. And why not? Hadn’t all of the great albums already been made? Why should I listen to an album all the way through?

I kinda retained that flawed attitude until I became the music director at the station. At that point, I had been there for awhile, knew DJ style preferences, and had to talk to promoters about their “product.” Of course, that means albums and I very much dislike the phrase. Just like I hate when I hear a DJ say that they audition songs for their shows. Trust me, there are very few artists out there that make music to pass an audition for any radio DJ. And one wonders, if the roles were reversed, how many DJs would pass their audition, myself included.

This long introduction was to get to this point: In my weekly “album faves” lists, I state that I changed the way I listen to music, and now listen to albums all the way through.

“Out From the Door” by Dylan McDonald and The Avians was the album that caused that change.

This is Day 6 of my “New Rotations: Albums” list! These are albums that are still in my listening rotation beyond what I would consider to be a normal run on my music player. They are post influence forming, but are awesome nonetheless! They should have been deleted long ago to make room for other music, yet I like them so much, I break my own rules for this music.

I first discovered it at the station in January 2013. It was part of a new promotion for an album that had been recorded a couple of years prior, but that me have been it’s first “push.”

I liked a couple of the songs, and played them.

“Welcome to the Land of the Avians” was the first song I played and also the first track. I liked the prog rock sci-fi vibe. It was dramatic. The track starts out with people talking as background noise, similar to “Sgt. Pepper.” Daniel DeMonico’s crying guitar lines reminded me of Dave Gilmour’s! The strings were a very nice added touch!

It was catchy, so I went to my next pick, “Send Me Back to Earth.” Soaring harmonies over a great melody that sounded like it could fit on Pink Floyd’s “Meddle” album, was more than I needed. And it describes someone who’s homesick because Mars wasn’t what they thought it would be. His family is back on earth.

After that gem, I went back looking for more. As I worked my way through the album, I noticed the high level of consistency of the songs as well as the similarity of textures, just like classic albums from those classic years of the 60s and 70s!.

It finally dawned on me, that, hey! Great albums could still be made today!

I picked it as my best album of 2013, when the Philbys were in their development stage.

So it was Dylan McDonald that changed my style of listening to albums, and I thank him for that!

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to “Out From the Door.” It still fascinates me after probably hundreds of plays!

Here’s a couple of samples of songs from the album:

https://youtu.be/0Dy_fEz2ILQ

Here’s a live clip of the band sounding a lot like Tom Petty on the title track. This is to show you that the band can deliver playing it live. I also like the fact that drummer Joshua Cobb gets singled out for smiling a lot! Guitarist Emmanuel Garza of Jim McCarty and Mystery Train says you can’t beat a happy drummer! Keyboardist Will Brown does a great job adding organ flourishes and such!

https://youtu.be/ivyJmbJhXeI

Just as an aside, Dylan McDonald and the Avians second album “Fueled By Dreams of the Future” (Philby Award winner) provides the same wonderful musical vibes!

Fueled by Dreams of the Future

Here’s “Stone Tree Fairy” (Philby Award winner) from that album!:

I think the two albums together are two of the best albums of the 21st century, so far!
