Philby 100 Best Albums of 2017

It was an incredible year for music! Once again, I listened to thousands of albums and I had to trim several hundred of them to keep the list at 100!

I think, on an individual basis, each album has its own unique brilliance—just like every diamond does. That is also why I list some of the individual categories next to most of them, to highlight the brilliance that each one brings!

So without further delay, these are the PHILBY 100 BEST ALBUM WINNERS for 2017. Just remember that even at album 100, there are thousands of albums on the other side of that number. Each one is an artistic work of art, no matter what the genre is. The musicians were artists at the top of their game! Hope you find something you enjoy! Let me know your thoughts!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 28, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

There’s also a new “Top 9 at 3:09” on Wednesday afternoons on my “Mid Day Theme Attic Show” from 2p-4P ET that does the list that wasn’t featured on “Prime Time Theme Attic that week! (Whew!)

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 28, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

There’s also a new “Top 9 at 3:09” on Wednesday afternoons on my “Mid Day Theme Attic Show” from 2p-4P ET that does the list that wasn’t featured on “Prime Time Theme Attic that week! (Whew!)

It’s a Puzzle on “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Monday Night, 8PM-10PM ET!!!

I rarely do this, but since I seemed to be lacking an idea for Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM ET, I decided to see what national day it is. As luck would have it, Monday is National Puzzle Day which immediately got my mind working on songs with puzzle references. Some are obvious. Others are not.

Packing more songs than I can play until the “Top 9 at 9:09,” I will play one track at a time about puzzles. Some are literal. Some are metaphorical. Aw, you know the drill! Songs by artists on the show will include Pretty City, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, DetroitSecrets (The Secrets), ShwizZ, Birdsong At Morning, Jesse Xavier, BoDeans, YES (official), SAINT MOTEL, Simon & Garfunkel, The Rolling Stones (album in the center), Emmylou Harris, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, The Katydids (album pictured on left), Shirley Ellis, Frank Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac (album pictured on right), the liquid scene, Animal Hours, The Static Dial, The Yardbirds, Prince, Escaping Pavement, and probably more!!!

Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, Echo or Tune In Players, or with this special puzzle solving streaming link: http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html Please share freely with your fans, friends, and families, but say something about yourself in the comments section when you repost it, so that everyone knows why your posting it!

Phil Ayoub and Kris Delmhorst in The Spotlight on “Mid Day Theme Attic,” Wednesday, 2PM-4PM ET!!!

Wednesday’s edition of “Mid Day Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 2PM-4PM ET, (right after “Afternoon Jazz” with Mr. Jags from Noon-2PM ET), will feature a couple of spotlight albums that I found roaming around the station’s archives. One of them, “Arrivals and Departures” by Phil Ayoub (album cover on left), has such a variety of musical styles that it’s no surprise why I like it! The second one features sharp songwriting by Kris Delmhorst called “Blood Test” (album pictured on right)!

The show will also have the first “Top 9 at 3:09” this year counting down this week’s “Phil’s Faves Songs!”

There will also be a musical tribute to three important women in my life that passed away in the past month. Songs by other artists will include The Rosebuds, AQUILA YOUNG, SPELLES, The Decemberists, Ben Rogers, DetroitSecrets, ShwizZ, Danny Schmidt, Birdsong At Morning, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, Jesse Xavier, Animal Hours, the liquid scene, and maybe more!!!

Another new music extravaganza takes place on Wednesday morning!

After spending more than a month on the Philbys, I like the Showcases to kickstart the year as it lays out a possible roadmap for the next few months, and maybe beyond.
