Phil’s Faves: Albums, September 24, 2017

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, September 24, 2017

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

“Way Down Yonder” with Signal Flags and “Prime Time Theme Attic” 2nd Anniversary!!!

https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000214415022-wjyetp-t500x500.jpg

Seattle based indie rockers, Signal Flags, have been on both of my faves lists for several months now with their album, “Steak and Shake” as well as a song, “Brake Accelerator.”

Well, the band (John Giaccone, Mitch Brasch, Dave Tingley, and Doug Patterson) has returned to my songs faves list with a Charlie Daniels Band cover of “Way Down Yonder.” The way the band plays it, reminds me of Ten Years After. They clipped me again from my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” so I’ll let you decide for yourself:

https://youtu.be/SUsZ2Rv7w4U

I will feature another track from “Steak and Shake” that I haven’t played yet, on my Monday night show from 8PM-10PM EDT!!

Here’s a link to stream the show:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It can also be heard at 89.3 FM (WHFR) in the Dearborn—Detroit area!!!

It’s also been two years since the night time version of “Theme Attic” known as “Prime Time Theme Attic” hit the airwaves! The actual date of the first broadcast was September 14, 2015. I decided to cover other themes for the past couple of weeks, but I do like to mark milestones. So, Monday night’s show from 8PM-10PM EDT with Phil Maq will be a little looser than usual. I don’t know how that’s even possible, but we’ll find out!

Songs by artists invited to the celebration will include Michael on Fire, Bill Edwards, Eileen Carey, Rosewater, Deni Bonet, Kate Jablonski, Happy Traum, The Hangabouts, Signal Flags, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, DownTown Mystic, Alison Krauss, Mark Lavengood (Mark Lavengood), Ed Dupas, Yusuf / Cat Stevens, and more!!! Tune in to @89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM), Tune in Player App, or with this one time only two year anniversary link: http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html Please share with your fans, friends, and families!!!

2017 Philby Submission: Last Call or First Chance!!!

The Philby AwardIf you go outside right now in the Detroit area, you’ll notice that some leaves have begun to change, foreshadowing lower temperatures to come. I can’t believe it’s already September!

But on the Philby calendar, September is November!

There are only a couple more months to go before I start making decisions as to what will be on this year’s Philbys lists! I already have about six hundred potential candidates out of the thousands that I have already checked out this year. So, my dance card’s pretty full. But, I don’t mind it being fuller. (Or brush, man!)

For the first time ever, I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

Usually, I just bounce around serendipitously listening to albums that I run across, either at the station or what I encounter from exploration. I know I miss things, but I can’t possibly listen to them all. It’s impossible. However, I think I still have the physical capacity to listen to even more.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2014, I will accept that music for consideration. When it comes to independent self-released projects, an artist may not know how to get their product marketed or recognized. It may take a couple of years to figure that part of it out.

If you have something older than 2014, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums, however, if you only have a good single, send me that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list. But don’t send me an incomplete album. Don’t edit for me. I hate that and I would probably disqualify the selection.

Don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music and I probably won’t listen if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address for a physical copy.

More than likely, if your music came out later than May, it may not show up on the 2017 list. It’s not impossible, but I’m just being honest. I like to have music on my lists that I’ve been playing all year and not knock one thing off my list for something that I haven’t played. I hate it that many year-end lists by music magazines or other sources will often include several selections that were released in late November and early December. How convenient for those artists. An album is a piece of art that has to survive several listens to see if it should qualify as viable.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

At the least, your music will either be your last chance for this year’s Philby lists, or a first call for next year’s.

Regardless please e-mail your mp3, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person. If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!
