Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 30, 2016

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 30, 2016

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.
Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Three New Halloweenie Videos That Are Hellagood!!!

While most of us have been spending the Halloween season revisiting old favorites, several musicians have been working up some spooky new fun.

Dearborn, Michigan’s Jo Serrappere and her band The LaFawndas haven’t even released their new album “Dollar Store Nation” yet—that happens this Saturday, November 5th at The Ark in Ann Arbor, but the band was dying to release their new video. And it’s awesomely creepy!

It’s an animated version of the song, “Livin’ the Good Life,” in which the ghost singing the subdued little ditty is trying to figure out all of her haunting options. The conclusion she comes to is why haunt some low life place when you can do the same thing at a rich location and rub ectoplasmic elbows with the upper crust? There are plenty of animated cameos including Clark Gable and a priceless prize fight between Edison and Tesla! The video is both directed and animated by Matt Rasch and perfectly captures the feeling of the song!

The next video is only a few weeks old itself. Xposed 4Heads, a band from Milwaukee that has a Devo vein in its makeup, takes DIY to the extreme for its new video, “Save All Monsters.” The lo-tech nature of the video contributes to the silliness of the experience that features all of the classic monsters mentioned in puns throughout the song. I’m sure that “The Monster Mash” was an inspiration for the song and video, and its heart is in the right place—if it had one!

Finally, New York singer/ songwriter, Jen Houston, delivers a delightfully spooky portrayal of a song from her latest album, “I Was Told There Would Be Pie.” She does a great job as a woman with problems traveling back in time in her video of, “There’s No One Here, But Us Bones!” The video is a “2015 Coney Island Film Festival Winner!” Nice twangy guitar, too!

All of these songs will be featured on my Halloween show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Monday night, from 8PM-10PM ET! Be there…IF YOU DARE!!!!!

Less Than Two Months to the 2016 Philby Awards!!!

The Philby Award for Brilliant Musical Achievement

Wow! Can you feel it? Summer and October are in the rear view mirror and the end of the year is fast approaching, but that just means the 2016 Philby Awards (TM) are that much closer. Will you make the list?  (See lists of previous winners here.)

Every year, I take the best of everything I listened to over the last 12 months and generate my top songs and albums of the year. Now, don’t despair if you haven’t sent me your music for consideration. There’s still time. The awards are based on what I’ve listened to over the course of the year, not what was released during that time.

There’s no Philby in your future if I can’t listen to your music, so be sure to send it my way. I prefer to receive an mp3 at my email address, phil@philmaq.com. If you need to send a digital copy, contact me at the email address for further instructions. I’m looking for anything that was released since 2014. However, if you have something older, send it along. I might be able to use it on my shows. Or, if you know someone who might be interested, pass this along to them. Thank you in advance!

No worries. I listen to and play all styles of music on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” Wednesday mornings from 10A-12 Noon ET, and “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Monday evenings from 8P-10P ET on WHFR.FM.

So, good luck, because the Philbys will be here before we know it!

“Never Twice” by Nick Waterhouse

NW-Holly-FRONT.indd

It finally happened! I’ve been waiting all year for an album to “knock my socks off,” and it happened today! Nick Waterhouse’s new album, “Never Twice,” finally did it! It sounds like it was recorded in some smoke-filled jazz club in the 60’s, but it seems amazingly adaptable to today!

Raw! Soulful! Beautiful!

Love at first listen!
