Phil’s Faves: Albums, December 25, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 25, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Contractual Obligation Show on This Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EST!!!

For as long as I’ve been at the station, this would normally be a year end best of retrospective week.
Well, it has been moved back to the first week of the New Year.
I found this out just before the Holidays.
You know.
When a normal person is busy doing other things.
Shucks! That means I had to come up with another theme.
Hence, Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with host Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EST will be “The Contractual Obligation Show!”
Typically, the term has been used over the years in the music business when an artist is moving on to a new label, or a group wants to break up but finds out that they actually had agreed to a number of albums that were supposed to be released within a specified time period but didn’t meet the goal.
“Let It Be” turned out to be both a contractual obligation movie AND album that The Beatles had no idea they needed to do as they were on the verge of breaking up.
Now, historically, those albums were often suspect that the content was something that was just slapped together to meet the required goal to prevent the artist from being sued.
However, with this “Theme Attic” show, nothing could be further from those last ditch efforts.
That’s because my contract with my listeners is to provide excellent music on any show that I do!
And I do so with Wednesday’s show!
I was just having some fun with the naming of this show!
I have two Countdowns, one each for my weekly Fave Songs and Albums!
The song’s Top 9 are at approximately 12:09 EST!
The albums will be a Top 9 at 2:09 EST!
I’ve been trying to fit in a Fave Songs Countdown for weeks so it finally hit me: why not do both?!
The final proof of my quality commitment is that the show contains my goal of 2 artist debuts, 6 new releases, and 17
artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!! (Actually, there’s even more than that!)
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
And…they are NOT in chronological order.
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09 PM EST should include The Armoires (Christina Bulbenko, Big Stir Records), Roger Ponder, Ben Levin Piano (Ben Levin, Aron Levin)(His latest album cover “Take Your Time” is left of center in the banner!), Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, Detroit Strong Music (Tosha Owens, Keith Laurin), Circa Waves, The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters), Nick Piunti & The Complicated Men (Nick Piunti) (Their latest album, “Heart Inside Your Head” is in the upper left corner of the banner!), (They will have another song in the second half of the show, too!), Gary Browe, Erin Zindle, Linden Thoburn, Roger Ponder, Bobby Pennock (who may be off fishing), Dirk Kroll, Wendy Webb, Fathom Lane (Michael Ferrier), Nora Jane Struthers (Nora Jane Overton, Joe Overton), Sugar Snow (Simone Berk), Vicky Emerson (Vicky Emerson-Wallace), Vanderlust, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM should include Lyn Stanley, Sarah Morris with Lars-Erik Larson (Her new album “merry, little, light” is second from the left in the banner!), Bob Malone, Brittany Jean Music, Harmonious Wail (Their album cover for “Holiday Spirits” is second from the right in the banner!), Ben Cook-Feltz, Laura Rain and The Caesars, Mike Ward, Annie & Rod Capps, Lenny Gomulka & Chicago Push (Lenny Gomulka), Jennifer Cutting’s Ocean Orchestra (Jennifer Cutting)(Their album cover for “The Turning Year: Pandemic Sessions Unplugged” is on the right in the banner!), Da Yoopers, Mick Clarke, Mary Ann Kirt, Haynie and Samuel (Don Haynie), Sigrid Christiansen (Her album cover for “Every Moment” is just right of center in the banner!), The Legal Matters and more!!!
So grab a celebratory libation and a legal tablet (Ha, ha!), get a friend or two to listen with, and come along for the ride on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!

A WKNR Countdown on This Week’s “Malt Shop,” Monday, 2PM-4PM EST!!!

Today, December 26th, Phil Maq will not only be the Disc Jockey from 2PM-4PM EST, at the Malt Shop, he will also be the main Soda Jerk! (Or just plain “jerk” if you prefer.)
That’s right! I’ll be filling in for Daddy G!
So, I thought it would be fun-since I haven’t done one in several years, to do a WKNR Countdown from 59 YEARS AGO!
And not just the Top 13 or Top 20. No sir! No ma’am!
I will be doing the whole list, time permitting, plus bonus tracks!
Now, this list is from a time when I wasn’t aware of music guides, much less the intricacies of radio and music.
That wouldn’t happen for a few more years.
So, this is a unique snapshot of AM Radio in Detroit!
There’s no Beatles, no British Invasion, no psychedelic, no hippies.
It’s mostly American music, and many of the songs even I wasn’t familiar with.
If you want to have a little fun between the Holidays, join me on Monday, December 26, from 2PM-4PM EST!!!
So, grab a celebratory libation, get a friend or two to listen with, and come along for the ride on Wednesday’s “Malt Shop” from 2PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 18, 2022

12th Anniversary Show on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EST!!!

12 years!
Hard to believe!
At the time, I wasn’t even sure I’d make it past the first couple of months.
Yet, this is where I find myself, celebrating the 12th Anniversary of “Theme Attic” on Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!
There will be plenty of old friends with me as well as some new ones!
And although I may be somewhat delusional, I like to think that all the music I play is GREAT, and that if I play your music, we are friends!
Well, perhaps, at least, kindred spirits!
There will be some seasonal music as well as a Top 9 at 2:09 Weekly Album Countdown!
And a celebration wouldn’t be one without some “gifts,” and I have a couple of those to give away!
The phone number for those items is 313-845-9676, #1!
In between, there will be 5 artist debuts, 6 New Releases, 11 artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!!
And the number “12” is a magical number with today’s show!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
And…they are NOT in chronological order.
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09 PM EST should include David LaMotte (David LaMotte Community)(His album cover “Still” is third from the left in the banner, The Walk-A-Bout, The Wag (Brian Ostering, Alicia Van Sant), Steve Howell and The Mighty Men with Kathryn Hobgood Ray (Katy Hobgood Ray Music) (Steve Howell), Spook Handy – Music for all Souls (Spook Handy), Dan Hall, Dave Solo with Rod Johnson, Judy Nazemetz (Judy Nazemetz), Bill Edwards with Inanna Andres, The Stan Laurels (John Lathrop), The Arrogant Worms, Cathy Fink and Marcy A. Marxer, Jay Elle, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM EST should include Laura Rain and The Caesars, Jennifer Naegele, Sarah Morris with Annie Fitzgerald (Sarah Morris), Ben Cook-Feltz, The Joedai Warriors (Their “Over the Edge” album cover is on the right in the banner!) (Joe Peters, The Blueflowers (Kate Hinote)(Their “Time Doesn’t Matter” album is second from the right in the banner!), Lyn Stanley, Bob Malone, Brittany Jean Music, Terry Collins, Mike Ward, Franki Pineapple Music (Franki Pineapple), Jennifer Cutting (Jennifer Cutting’s Ocean Orchestra‘s album cover for “Songs of Solstice” is on the far left in the banner!), Kenny Young and the Eggplants (Kenny Young)(Their album cover for “Toxic Swamp and Other Love Songs” is second from the left in the banner!), Ben Harper, and more!!!
So grab a celebratory libation, get a friend or two to listen with, and come along for the ride on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 11, 2022
