Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2019 Award Winners!!!

I’ve heard it said before that a song or single is kind of like a musical business card.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the songwriter or the artist that made that statement.

I construct every one of my shows thinking that it was the best music for those moments in time.

I rarely ever wish I could take one of them back!

I treat my weekly shows as if I am the music programmer at my own radio station.

And from those shows, I construct my weekly Fave Song lists, just like in the radio days, when almost every station had a music guide of what songs they played.

A song cannot appear on my year end list without having been played on one of my shows.

Those same lists then get analyzed for my year end list.

So, here we are.

I like to think that the songs I select are a piece of someone’s heart, or soul, if you will.

They certainly are much more than a song!

My putting the them together in this list is more an effort to rank how I, as well as other listeners, reacted to the songs.

The songs cover such a variety of styles, it would be impossible to say that one is better than another. But where I felt that someone exceeded at what they did on their project, I gave them a special award. Those are truly mine!

Also, this is the first time that I put links to the songs to examine for yourself.

That was a whole other experience!

I discovered many videos I didn’t know existed. I also found live versions of songs when there wasn’t an official audio version of the song. Some were spectacular!

This makes the list, in a sense, it’s own piece of art. It makes it a fresh and breathing list for anyone to explore!

87 of the tracks are represented, and I tried to find them all! I didn’t time it out, but I’m sure it would take 5 to 6 hours to explore the songs on it that have links.

Regardless, this will be a list for further exploration!

So here it is!

This year’s song list of brilliant musical achievement!!!

  1. One Water—Mike Gentry (Mike Gentry) [Best Arrangement, Best Production]

Phil’s Faves: Albums, March 8, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, March 8, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8PM-10PM ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Prime Time Theme Attic Celebrates Women in Music, Monday Night 8PM-12 Midnight EDT!!!

Every year I do a show around International Women’s Day in support of women artists.

I try really hard to make sure that they are well represented on my show(s).

I don’t really give it much thought, now, because it happens instinctively for me. But that’s because I have a daughter who made me acutely (no pun intended) aware of women artists because she ONLY wanted to listen to female artists when she was a child!

So, at that point, I DID consciously look for women artists to be represented when I made vacation or Christmas mixes. That was before my DJ days.

However, I am still shocked when I read older stories of how male radio programmers felt about playing women artists. And it sometimes rears its ugly head as recently as a few years ago with the “Bro Country” trend.

So, every year, I have an opportunity to focus on what women are trying to say that may be their own unique viewpoint, and/or try to celebrate the greatness that they bring to music in particular, and to the world in general!

So, Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq will feature an opening two hour plus segment that-for all practical purposes is a two hour or so presentation of a 2020 Winter New Music Showcase, Pt.3!!!

It’s two hours or so, because Monday night’s show will be on from 8PM-12 Midnight EDT!!!

There will be mostly songs from brand new or unreleased tracks from albums, plus a couple of choice albums that are older, but fit the women’s theme.

From 8PM-10PM, songs by artists will include Kid Gulliver, Linda Hicks (Her album cover for “In the Corner” is third from the left in the banner.), Sarah MorrisfRiCTiON fARM, Ariane Lydon,(Her album cover for “Listen to Crows” is second from the right in the top row of the banner.), Tosha Owens Music (Tosha Owens)Claudia Nygaard, Linden Thoburn Lindenthoburnmusic (Her soon to be released album “Scarecrow” is in the bottom row on the right.) NÉRIJADiamonds in the Rust, soon to be released The Claudettes, (The album cover for “High Times in the Dark” is on the left in the banner.), Rochelle ClarkHannah Baiardi, Liz E Brooks, (Her album cover for “My Own Magic” is second from the left in the banner.), Helene Cronin Music,, Lauren Crane,, Vicky Emerson (Her album for “Steady Heart” is fourth from the left in the banner.), Sigrid Christiansen, The Knickerbocker All-StarsNora Jane Struthers (Her album cover for “Bright Lights, Long Drives, First Words” is in the banner on the upper right), Nancy Wright, and a supporter of women’s rights-David Roof,  and definitely more!!!

The second half of tonight’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 10PM-Midnight EDT, will still have a focus on women artists, but will have a few male artists because I will be doing a “Top 9 at 10:09” for this week’s Fave Albums!

And even though you won’t be able to see it around Detroit, other areas of the country will still be able to see this month’s Super Worm Moon!

It looked beautiful last night and this morning! So that calls for some Moon Tunes!

Songs by artists on this part of the show will include Judy BankerCindy Ruenes MusicAmilia K SpicerMichael on FireNick Piunti & The Complicated MenBill Grogan’s GoatEd DupasMagic MusicJohn Ford Coley, Clark County Drifters, Erin Zindle & The RagbirdsKaryn Oliver, Liz Bebee, May ErlewineJo Serrapere & the Willie DunnsMary Ann Kirt Music PageTracy Kash Music PageBecki Digregorio, and maybe more!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, March 1, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, March 1, 2020
