Phil’s Faves: Albums, December 15, 2019

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

Here’s a link:

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Let’s Celebrate My 9th Anniversary with the Second Half of My Jon Anderson Interview, Monday Night 8PM-10PM ET!!!

It’s hard to believe that 9 years ago on December 17th, I did my first show on 89.3 WHFR.FM.

It was fun, scary, and fascinating!

I don’t remember anything going wrong for that show, but I certainly learned many things the hard way.

Back then, I used to do my show on Thursdays at 10 in the morning. Then it moved to Wednesdays at 10.

Now I continue on Monday nights.

But on this Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM EST, I have something extra special planned!

When I interviewed Jon Anderson for his summer Detroit appearance, I only played half of the interview. I wanted to supplement his words with the musical tracks we discussed. If you know anything about YES (official), you know that most of their tracks are fairly lengthy.

So, I decided to only air half of it and save the rest for a special occasion!

My ninth anniversary should suffice quite nicely!

I will also have a “Top 9 at 9:09” as The Philby Awards take a break this week.

Hmmm. Ninth anniversary. Top 9 at 9:09.

Seems to be a lot of 9s here. Maybe something mystical. I wonder what John Lennon would think of this!

Anyway, there will be plenty of great music! As always!

Songs by other artists should include Edwardsongs (Bill Edwards), Sarah MorrisXposed 4Heads with Blaine L. Reininger,, Vegas With RandolphDave Boutette  and Kristi Lynn DavisDetroit Pleasure SocietyJen SygitMagic Music, The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters & FriendsThe WagKatie Dahl MusicTHE DIRK KROLL BANDJohnny IrionPhil Lee – The Mighty King Of LoveBe Bop Deluxe, The Belle Hollows,  Billy Brandt and the Sugaree’sTelamor, and maybe more!!!

Listen with a friend or maybe a prairie dog, come along for the ride, and tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special nueve link : https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), RadioFM or tell Alexa to find the show for you!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 8, 2019

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8PM-10PM ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2019 Countdown Begins, Monday Night 8PM-10PM ET!!!

When the daylight is as short as it gets in a year, and trees are as bare as they can be, The Philby Awards show up to shine a light on some GREAT music!

Yeah, I’m pretty full of myself with that last statement, but I like to think that I do bring a little joy out there to somebody!

Anyway, the Countdown starts on Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM ET!!!

The format that I will use most often for the Philby shows will be a song by two artists I haven’t played before to open and close the show.

This one will feature Photo Ops and Midori and Ezra Boy!

Then I will start counting down from where I left off but I will go past twenty songs per show. We’ll see how that goes. The banner will offer clues for who will be on the show.

No reason to have more explanations than that.

Songs by other artists on the show will include Elliot Schneider, Whit Hill, Michael on Fire , Katy Guillen and The Girls (pictured in the banner), California Guitar TrioRich Hopkins and the LuminariosPaul Kelly (pictured above on the right in the banner), The Valery Trails, George Bedard, Happy CurmudgeonsDave Boutette and Kristi Lynn Davis (pictured in the center of the banner), (Johnny Williams), Morgan Treni & The Landscapes  with Angela Perley, Tom Curless, Avid DancerAmy PettyThe Simon Kennedy Band, Andy Santana and The West Coast Playboys, @The Prime Ministers, The Brother Brothers, and Sutter Zachman,!!!

Listen with a friend or a prairie dog, come along for the ride and tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special Philby approved link : https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use RadioFM or Firefox to stream it.

It’s Philby Time!: An Overview!

The Philby Award

I did something a couple of weeks ago that I don’t normally do–look at a calendar and do some planning.

I had to.

It was time to start figuring out when the Philby Awards would begin…and possibly end.

The run up is kinda easy and I have it down:

  • The “Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Show” just before Thanksgiving,
  • The last New Music Showcase the week after Thanksgiving,
  • The start of The Philby Awards the week after that.

And that’s where we are.

So the Philby Awards Countdowns begin on Monday night, December 9, 2019 on my “Prime Time Theme Attic” show from 8PM-10PM ET!!!

I am also planning several interruptions to have special in-studio guests celebrating new album releases!

I think when someone releases some new music that they have sweated over for many months and possibly years, and they want to share their new work of art on my show with me AND my listening audience–as well as talk about it, that is something that I don’t want to miss!

I will always make room for those special days! It’s a great honor to me!

So, at this point looking forward, I expect the final Philby show to end in early March.

However, I found out last year when weather interrupted my Countdowns for weeks at a time, that it’s OK to extend The Philbys. They will still happen, and can be enjoyed when it happens!

Now, last year was an exception. That was the first year that the HFC campus was closed like that since I’ve been at the station. I’m not expecting that to happen again, but I haven’t checked with the weather gods.

Once again, I am more than willing to extend them should any other special music occasion present itself!

Anyway, that’s the layout for now.

I hope you can join me as often as you can to check things out.

An easy way to stay up to date on what’s happening is to “like” my Phil Maq page.

AND lastly, I hope everyone has a very merry Philby Season!

2016 Slowly Fades Away For Philby Consideration…

The Philby Award

2019 will soon reach it’s inevitable conclusion, but it’s another year I have on my mind.

That’s because 2016 will be disappearing for music to be considered for this year’s Philby Awards.

I use a sliding four year window for my annual best albums list, and this year the range is 2016-2019.

I figure that-with some luck, I should stumble upon an artist’s great music, if  not by submission, then, through serendipity, happenstance, or some astral fluke.

I have even requested some musician’s work from 2016 because I think that I may be missing some of the best music made in the last four years and it deserves recognition.

Now, I do have my own requirement that I have to play at least one song from an album on one of my shows to be considered for an award.

Since I currently only do one show per week, those opportunities will be disappearing soon.

However, I actually have some planned slots that I can debut several potential albums. And I will continue to do so until the Philby album countdowns start.

So, please read the rest of this post to find out how to send me your music.

And you may find out that 2016 was a pretty good year after all!

______________________________________________________________

Right now, I am considering about six hundred albums.

That seems like a fairly large number, but really it’s not, because I am considering releases from 2016 through 2019.

As large as my working list is, I know I have room for more.

I can never have enough!

Therefore, I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2016, I will accept that music for consideration. When it comes to independent self-released projects, an artist may not know how to get their product marketed or recognized. It may take a couple of years to figure that part of it out.

If you have something older than 2016, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I hate that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music and I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address for a physical copy.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!
