Day 9 of New Rotation Albums List: “Hey Kid” by Angela Perley and The Howlin’ Moons!!!

Related image

Well, it’s been a while since I posted anything on my list. I thought this might happen, but I thought it would have happened several times and not just one extended break. I know it coincided with the continuous grass cutting that I’ve had to do.

So, let’s try to finish this list.

This is Day 9 of my “New Rotations: Albums” list! These are albums that are still in my listening rotation beyond what I would consider to be a normal run on my music player. They are post influence forming, but are awesome nonetheless! They should have been deleted long ago to make room for other new music, yet I like them so much, I break my own rules for this music.

Angela Perley and The Howlin’ Moons put out a brilliant album in 2016 called “Homemade Vision.”

That album received much airplay on my shows as well as other programs on WHFR and I selected it for my 2016 Philby Album List https://philmaq.com/philbys/2016-philby-album-award-winners/, and several songs made my “Hot 100 Songs of 2016” https://philmaq.com/philbys/2016-philby-song-award-winners/ including the Song of the Year winner, “White Doves!”

I have seen the band several times in the past couple of years which has always included a trip to Ohio, because that’s where the band is located and typically plays a lot of gigs in their home state. Angela plays guitar and saw (?!) as well as handling main vocals. Her voice is very distinctive and has a style like many of the easily recognizable rock artists.

The rest of the Howlin’ Moons consists of guitar shredder Chris Connor and bass phenom Billy Zehnal. For the three times I have seen the band, they have had a “drummer du jour.” Surprisingly, it didn’t affect their performances, which is amazing considering all of the starts and stops that their songs have. On “Hey Kid,” Jeff Martin handled the beat.

The album starts off with a somewhat autobiographical song called “Athens.” It also bookends the album with a short instrumental reprise. It is probably the most mature approach the band had done up until then. But don’t worry. From that opening song, the band contains a whole slew of rock songs!

https://youtu.be/y7wLCEanM4I

I’m guessing that “George Stone” is a somewhat true story because the character delivers the “Hey Kid” line of the album’s title. “Milk in the Fridge,” “Hurricane” and my favorite, “Bad Reputation” keep the album rocking with an energy that rock albums require, or don’t call it rock! In the middle of all these high energy songs is the one that the band identifies with and gets its name from, “Howlin” at the Moon.”

The songs are tight, with searing guitar solos, clever lyrics, and big choruses! It’s easy to see why I stay hooked!

https://youtu.be/8IkahmzfDzc

Now some extra info on my list. I thought “Hey Kid” was older than it was. I had no idea that it was released in 2014 or I would have made it eligible for my Philbys last year. That’s one of the problems that I keep highlighting about independent releases. Release dates are sometimes vague. So for that reason, I think I will consider it for this year’s list.

So, I will pick another number 9….

Phil’s Faves: Albums, June 17, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 17, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Homeless Show on Monday Night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic,” 8PM-10PM ET!!!

There’s a whole spectrum of music out there covering every kind of emotion and situation. I usually prefer music that’s upbeat and positive. However, there are times during the year when I do get serious.

Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM is one of those times. 89.3 WHFR.FM will feature an annual Homeless Marathon and I feel obligated to do my part by playing music that spotlights a serious plight since a good percentage of the country can find itself out on the street if they have enough bad brakes happen to them.

On the lighter side, there will be the weekly “Top 9 at 9:09” and this week it’s an album countdown as well as a couple of tunes by artists coming to town!

Songs by artists on the show will include Whit Hill, Darlingside, Caleb Ford, Guy Clark, The Ragbirds, Jere Stormer, Sloan Music, The Cranberries, Dustbowl Revival, Where’s Keith, Black Note Graffiti, Scott Martin BAND, Billy Brandt Music, Stevie Wonder, The Ettes, Happy Traum, Andy McKee (I have tickets for his Tuesday June 12th show at The Ark – Ann Arbor!) (Here’s the phone number so you’ll be ready: 313-845-9676, option #1), Martin Tourish (Happy Birthday!) and Luke Ward, Matthew Sweet, Stabby Robot, Shania Twain, and more!!!

Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special homeless link : https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use Tune In Player to stream it.
