Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 3, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, May 27, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and Flowers on Wednesday Morning’s “Theme Attic,” 10AM-12 Noon EDT!!!

So, the May full moon, known as the flower moon, happened on Tuesday. Sunday was Flower Day. Hey! I can take a hint. That’s why Wednesday morning’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq, from 10AM-12 Noon EDT will play music about flowers as one of its subjects!

Since there wasn’t a new show on Monday night, I typically go through countdown withdrawals if I don’t do one at least once a week, there will be a “Phil’s Faves: Albums countdown “Top 9 at 11:09!”

Throw in some music by performers playing in town this weekend, and that’s the show. It seems so simple…but it’s NOT!

There will be a small tribute to Benny Goodman on his birthday as both he and Gene Krupa enter the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame!”

Anyway, songs by other artists on Wednesday’s show will include Be Bop Deluxe, James Taylor, The Native Howl, Whit Hill, Sam Corbin, Mark Jewett Music (Album cover for “Love Has No Heart of Its Own” in the banner), Darlingside, Boo Ray (Album cover for “Sea of Lights” in the banner), Caleb Ford, Beach House, Black Note Graffiti, Steve ’n’ Seagulls, Amy Petty, Annie & Rod Capps, Jo Philby, The Ragbirds, Lissie, Billy Brandt Music, Scott Martin BAND, Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons, Joe Overton, Animal Hours, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson, and possibly more!!!

Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special floral link: https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use Tune In Player to stream it.

Day 8 of New Rotation Albums List: “Arrival and Departures” by Phil Ayoub!!!

Arrivals and Departures

My next selection is, “Arrivals and Departures” by Phil Ayoub.

Wow! Another “Phil” makes my List to join Phil Lee! Two Phils! Two Dutch bands! Go figure!

The album was released in 2010—although I only started listening to it a couple of years ago.

This is Day 8 of my “New Rotations: Albums” list! These are albums that are still in my listening rotation beyond what I would consider to be a normal run on my music player. They are post influence forming, but are awesome nonetheless! They should have been deleted long ago to make room for other new music, yet I like them so much, I break my own rules for this music.

I found it roaming the station’s archives. I was hooked on it in January of this year, when I featured it as one of my spotlight albums when I was doing “Mid Day Theme Attic.” In my January 24th show preview, I wrote: “Arrivals and Departures” by Phil Ayoub, has such a variety of musical styles that it’s no surprise why I like it! I’m still jonesing for it!

This is a singer/songwriter at the top of his game! The songs are mostly about relationships. I guess those would be the “arrivals and departures.” You can choose between romantic (“Walk You Home”, “Flowers at Work,”), sexy (“Body Language”), and bittersweet (“32 Memory Lane,” “Things That Remind Me You’re Gone”).

But underneath the whole album is a feeling of hope, no matter what!

“Get Out (Live a Little, Love a Lot)” sums it all up. Don’t stay at home letting “life” pass you by. Roll the dice! Take some chances!
