Steak and Shakin’ With Signal Flags!!!

Seattle based band Signal Flags released their sophomore album, “Steak and Shake,” a few months ago. It was a follow up to their debut album, “Conversations With Signal Flags,” an album title that always brought me much amusement when I would announce it after I played a song from it. (“How long would a conversation with signal flags take, let alone conversations!”)

With “Steak and Shake,” band members John Giaccone, Mitch Brasch, Dave Tingley, and Doug Patterson have put together an album full of high energy garage rock, southern rock, and classic rock with elements of psychedelic rock thrown in. The psych music rears its head with some mind bending guitar solos!

A couple of weeks ago, the album recently showed up on my Faves Albums List. The band were listening live and recorded this clip of me introducing and playing a track, “Highest Guy,” from “Steak and Shake” on my July 31 “Prime Time Theme Attic” show!

Signal Flags enjoyed my monologue about “Bushel Britches,” a person that I felt may have been a made up person. They have since informed me that Bushel Britches was a “nom de plume” of a former drummer.

So here’s that clip of “Highest Guy” from my show!

I will play another track from the album on this Monday’s (August 14) “Prime Time Theme Attic” along with lots of other great music from 8PM-10PM EDT. Please join me!!!

Here’s a link to stream the show:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It can also be heard at 89.3 FM (WHFR) in the Dearborn—Detroit area!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 6, 2017

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Wendy Webb’s “Step Out of Line” Features Detailed Songs and Incredible Vocals!!!

Wendy Webb | Step out of Line

It’s been more than two years since Wendy Webb released her multi-Philby Award winning album—including 2015 Album of the Year, “This Is the Moment,” but she’s taking care of that right now. Her latest album, “Step Out of Line,” has just been released stateside, even though it has already been out in Europe since the beginning of the year.

It’s well worth the wait!

The album consists of ten polished gems of many moods. Wendy and her dream list All Star lineup of grade-A musicians, including Dan Dugmore, Willie Weeks, Mark T. Jordan, Jim Horn, David Grissom, Wayne Jackson, Ron Krasinski, and more, have worked with some of the greatest artists in the past forty years ranging from The Rolling Stones to George Harrison to Linda Ronstadt! Wendy’s talent fits in very well with those artists.

“Step Out of Line” is her fifth album. Wendy is a guide that takes the listener on a detailed musical journey through her lyrics. We visit “Camden Town” marketplace, “Mexico,” a meeting with “Destiny’s Muse,” her alter ego “The Girl From the North Country,” and a heartfelt “Freedom” ballad, but her ears are always open because she wants you to “Talk to Me.”

There’s touches of folk, Americana, pop, jazz, world, gospel, rock, and many styles in between. “Step Out of Line” is an album that has substance, soul, heart, and romance. And Wendy Webb has a voice that continues to amaze as it matures and emotes that wisdom!

This is one of the few albums that I was looking forward to when I knew it was in the works. My standards were high from her previous catalog. “Step Out of Line” far exceeded expectations!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 30, 2017

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Detroit Strong New and Old: Tosha Owens and Sammy Davis, Jr.!!!

After looking at arguably Detroit’s worst moment in history, it’s time to look at the present and the future with positive vibes!

Any artist will tell you that they’re always looking for a good song, if not a great song. Obviously, for most, those are extremely rare. A great song about a city? Well, you might as well pull out a musical microscope to find one.

Tosha Owens, an award winning Detroit singer, has done it! On her latest song and video, “Detroit Strong,” she adds her incredible talent to a song about what makes the city GREAT! The video is fun to watch as she visits many of Detroit’s fun and happening locales!

Tosha herself is an upbeat person with a pleasant personality! She always seems to have a smile on her face—except when she’s singing a song where she has to change that mood.

Sales of the song go to Sparky Anderson’s charity, CATCH!

I’m happy to say that I’ve had a chance to jam with her (That’s me, Phil Maq, sitting in on drums),  as well as legendary guitarist, Jim McCarty, upcoming guitar great, Jimmy Alter, and Marvelous Marvin Conrad on bass, at St. Clair Shores, “Blue Goose Inn!”

No automatic alt text available.

(Photo courtesy of Sally O’Mally Schroeder)

Of course, Tosha’s song brought to mind another song about Detroit from 1984, that was written by Berry Gordy, Jr. and Willie Hutch. There was a video to support Sammy Davis, Jr.’s great vocal of a song called, “Hello Detroit!” It’s interesting to watch views of the city across that 30 plus year timeline!

Wednesday morning’s “Theme Attic” show from 10A-12 Noon EDT, will continue with my self proclaimed, “New Summer of Love 2017!” Music in this second edition will sound similar to styles of music from 50 years ago, but will all be fairly new! songs by artists will include the liquid scene, The Vegabonds, Tosha Owens, Birth of Joy, Seth Bernard (“Eggtones” album pictured above left), The Static Dial, The Rutles, The Hangabouts, Cold Mountain Child (“Earth Wave Sway” album cover pictured above right), Secret Colours, Dylan McDonald And The Avians, Rachel Allyn, Madcat Midnight Blues Journey (Peter Madcat Ruth), Darlene Love, The Monkees, White Bats, and more!!! Tune in and turn on to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, Tune In Player on your smart phone, or with this far-out link: http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html Please share with your fans, friends, and families if you’re cool with that and tag me if you do!!!

July 23, 1967: Detroit, Michigan-The Revolution in Song!

Fifty years ago on Sunday July 23, I would normally be at a baseball game.

That was pretty much the pattern with my friends. If the Detroit Tigers were playing and I didn’t have any family plans, I would normally get everyone together and my brother would drop us off at Tiger Stadium.

We would take the bus home after the game including a transfer at Warren and Trumbull.

At that point in time, we were still sitting in the left field grandstands. $2 a ticket if I remember correctly.

On July 23, the Tigers had their usual Sunday afternoon game. For some reason, and I can’t remember why, I didn’t go to the game. I think I wasn’t feeling well. Believe me, next to music, baseball was my next favorite interest, and it was a very close second! I must have been close to being on a deathbed. We were all just kids anywhere from 9 to 11 years old.

Surprisingly, someone else was able to arrange a ride to the game. When I talked to my friends later, they told me that you could see heavy smoke over the top of the stadium. They said they had no idea what was going on, but the game continued so they didn’t worry about it.

But they also said that the atmosphere at the ballpark was strange that day. People seemed on edge. They said the bus ride also began to get scary and they wanted to get out of there fast. People were screaming and yelling. Everyone made it home safely, but not without worry.

Of course, unknown to them or myself, the uprising had begun earlier that day. And it seemed to go on for eternity that week.

And in a sense, it did.

As much as I tried to stay away from this topic on “Prime Time Theme Attic” with @Phil Maq, Mondays, from 8PM-10PM ET, I find that I am drawn to the music about the conflict. I wasn’t sure I would be able to get anywhere with the music, but I think I have it figured out. There will also be the usual but always unusual, Phil’s Faves: Songs, “Top 9 at 9:09!”

Gil Scott—Heron was a jazz beat poet that made his debut afterwards, and produced a song, that if a person could make the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame” on just one song, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” would be it. It was played on a consistent basis on all of the underground stations. The song will be featured on the show:

I’m not providing any answers or solutions, but I will look at music by artists surrounding what happened 50 years ago.
Artists that will be played will include Frank Bang and The Cook County Kings, John Lee Hooker, Red City Radio, Gordon Lightfoot, Alicia Marie, Gil Scott-Heron, Judy Banker, MC5. Mark Jewett Music, Madcat Midnight Blues Journey (Peter Madcat Ruth), The Garden of Soul, Dennis Coffey Fan Page (Dennis Coffey), Eliza Neals, Tim Buckley, Oak City Roots, Bruce Springsteen, Detroit Rebellion, and many more!!!
Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, Tune In Players, or with this rebellious link:http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html But be careful! The Man does not want you to listen! Please share with your fans, friends, and families, and tag me when you do!!! Peace!
