Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 30, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

One of the brightest, hopeful songs to ever be recorded came roaring out of 1965!

And it wasn’t by The Beatles!

“I Got You Babe,” an unexpected hyper-waltz (6/8 time) by a relatively unknown husband and wife duo, Sonny & Cher,  literally took over the radio when it was released!

In addition to the unusual time signature, the song prominently featured an oboe and glockenspiel!

The tambourine work is one of the best, and Hal Blaine, as part of the Wrecking Crew, gives an incredible performance on drums.

Sonny Bono, who wrote the song, gives the weakest performance on “I Got You Babe.” However, there is so much continually happening that the listener doesn’t even have time to notice it.

And speaking of vocals, Cher delivers a flawless, heartfelt performance on the bridge…as the song changes keys!

I feel it is her best performance!

“I Got You Babe” is part of a recurring joke in the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray. It plays every morning when his alarm clock goes off. It is a favorite movie of everyone in my family!

And even as many times as I’ve heard the song including the movie, I have never grown tired of it!

The use of echo and dynamics, the pauses and rhythm changes, and the innocent lyrics all lead to an enjoyable experience!

The song always feels very romantic and I have never grown tired of it!

And I am glad that I get to remember it’s wonderfulness every year at Groundhog Day!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “I Got You Babe” by Sonny and Cher!!!

“Theme Attic” Will Return Next Wednesday, February 9th!!!

Official word has arrived that Henry Ford College will be closed, Wednesday, February 2nd.

So, I shall begin working on the next “Theme Attic” on Wednesday, February 9th.

Everyone please stay safe so that we can listen together to the next “Theme Attic!”

Will There Be a “Theme Attic” Show on Wednesday?

So………………………………….

What to do?

What to do?

With major snowstorm Landon, aiming for the Metro Detroit area, the question arises whether there will be a “Theme Attic” Show on Wednesday?

Considering that as I write this post, there isn’t a snow flake to be seen and probably won’t be for another ten hours. iI’s rather difficult to figure out how much planning to put into the show.

There are already hundreds of school closings and it would seem a safe bet that the campus, and, therefore by default, the station will probably be closing, too.

However, I have decided to take a contrary approach.

I will work on the show just on the chance that maybe the storm won’t be as terrible as predicted.

Maybe just a little bit of opposite karma will work!

If it seems the show is a go, I will update this info.

Until then, we shall wait………………………………………………

Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 23, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Hello 2022! Goodbye 2018!!!

The Philby Award

I have several reasons why I look forward to the start of a new calendar year.

First of all, I love the somewhat confusing headline that contains the expected “hello” for the incoming new year, yet the “goodbye year” is not the most recent but one from four years prior.  However, when the new year starts, the old Philby year is far from over. And since I have lengthened the whole “season,” (The finales probably won’t happen until June.)  the actions that I do in the first days of the year seem to contradict the whole process.

A somewhat obvious New Year ritual of mine is the annual formatting of the next year Philby album list.

Even though it might be another eighteen or so months before that official list ever gets published, it actually helps to start the ending process for the previous year’s list.

For example, the new list can take on the role of a “safety valve.”

I always have more albums than I can possibly fit on any list. And I refuse to put an album on a list just because it seems like it should be on the list.

I want to know a release inside and out! If I have it listed on an early tentative list and I just haven’t been able to work it on to my player, then it will move on to that brand new list.

See: safety valve!

That allows me to really focus on the one hundred fifty or so albums that I’m really trying to listen to for the current Philby list.

But, not to worry.

I’ve had some albums transfer to that beginning year list several times and still make a final list!

I’ve said it before, that I kind of like to think of the selections as someone looking for a historical Hall of Fame selection in baseball. I want to make sure that all worthy selections find their proper spot!

Anyway, here’s what that blank list looks like right now.

All slots are open at the moment!

They all start this way.

A hundred choices sees like a lot. But trust me. It’s never enough.

And going forward, any reference for Philby submissions will reference the years 2019-2022

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2022 is 2019-2022.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2019, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2018, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

New Key Song of the Week: “Ghost Town” by Michael Snyder-Barker and David Roof!!!

Whenever I run across a fairly recent song that grabs my attention, I’ll try to bring it to other people’s attention by naming it a “New Key Song of the Week!”

The seed for this idea came from 60’s radio station WKNR (Dearborn, Michigan) music guides, that featured a weekly Key Song of the Week, so it’s kind of an homage to the station.

My distinction will be an additional, occasional weekly “New Key Album of the Week!”

The goal, as always, is to continue exploring new music!

I invite you to join me on that journey by signing up for my blog and receiving notices when I post a new entry!

For most people, the pandemic of the past two years disrupted any sense of normalcy.

However, for some people, that shutdown provided a different kind of “atmosphere” to develop creative circumstances that might have never happened.

For both Michael Snyder-Barker and David Roof, it allowed for a team up and the right situation!

Michael proposed a project where he supplied the lyrics, and David (who runs the highly  acclaimed Rooftop Recording studio in Grand Blanc, Michigan), having to work with then new covid safety protocols, would supply the music.

Many months later, the duo have released their new album, “Bark and Roof Tales,” that highlights some boundary pushing creativity!

Michael Snyder-Barker and David Roof are multiple Philby Award winners–my award for brilliant musical achievement, on many separate projects!

“Ghost Town” is their first single off the album that leads to even more inventive ventures on “Bark and Roof Tales!”

They even experimented with a video to showcase the song–one  that includes a pesky homemade ghost floating through scenes!

Featuring a tasty guitar solo as well as plenty of memorable hooks, “Ghost Town’s” lyrics recall those early first days of the pandemic!
